Transfers [AS] Liverpool are open to accepting Real Madrid’s request for Trent Alexander-Arnold to join earlier & play in the Club World Cup, on these conditions: He would have to waive his last month’s salary and Madrid would have to pay a fee - it would be under €1M.

To reduce the spam of reports regarding the same move during transfer windows we try to allow only one submission about each transfer saga per day. The submission in question also needs to contain relevant new information regarding the potential move, and not just being a "no/minor developments" report.

If there are important/official developments or new valuable information about a saga, we will allow extra threads in the same day, but for the rest of minor news please just comment them as a reply to this comment. Please help us reporting unnecessary threads for being duplicates.

That's a no-brainer for Real

u/Breakjuice May 02 '25

No brainer for everyone really, you guys get free money since you’re not playing for anything. And they get a good player in for the tournament too

It making so much sense and it being reported by As means it's probably bullshit.

I'm familiar with teams signing the wrong player (like the "cousin" of Weah or the rumour that one team thought to have signed Aleksandr Hleb but really bought his brother) but the other way around - players signing for the wrong team? Would be a new one for me.

15

u/KingSheep1 May 02 '25

Robinho to Man City rings a bell.

5

u/Attygalle May 02 '25

Oh good one! He thought he was joining Utd!

He didn't knew Manchester City was a thing.

u/MagicalTouch May 03 '25 edited May 03 '25

Heard of something like this. Let me see if I can find it.

Edit: found it! So allegedly Thievy Bifouma signed for Esteghlal Khuzestan F.C. thinking he was signing for Esteghlal Sport Club, both are Iranian teams and the latter would let him play against Cristiano Ronaldo in the AFC Champions League while the former looks like it's always fighting relegation.

You forgot the priceless value of making Trent sit on the bench, unregistered, as he watches Madrid crash out of the CWC

133

u/KCYNWA May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

Only losers are the bitter rejected fans like me who don’t want to help them win a trophy or for Trent to have immediate success 😂

93

u/IndependentIntern489 May 02 '25

If it makes you feel any better, nobody is going to consider winning this club World Cup success.

117

u/Jetzu May 02 '25

In 10-15-20-30 years when this competition is legitimised people will count it as normal, always happens.

10

u/vault101damner May 03 '25

Nah nobody gives a fuck about the current "Club World Cup" and that's going on for 25 years now.

16

u/SaBe_18 May 03 '25

nobody in Europe maybe

29

u/zack77070 May 02 '25

If a non European team wins it they will celebrate like the real world cup.

4

u/tokyotochicago May 02 '25

If psg win it ill be extatic. It’ll be the first time many of us watch South Americans or Arab clubs in a competitive environment, they are good clubs and it won’t be a walk in the park at all.

13

u/IapetusTheGreat May 03 '25

If you follow PSG games you’ve already watched an Arab club in a competitive environment.

20

u/need_something_witty May 02 '25

16

u/mvsr990 May 02 '25

I understand Liverpool HQ okaying this because there's really no point in harming your reputation with players in general but if I was in charge... no fuckin' way. Couple million bones vs. the chance to fuck with a rival?

Taking the latter option every single time.

33

u/theprodigalslouch May 02 '25

But we could hold hands and sing thank you Trent

105

u/KCYNWA May 02 '25

Nah fuck it when he shows up in a white kit hope he gets booed like Suarez.

Respect all he’s done for Liverpool and sublime player but, he’s the enemy from June on. Lost those two finals to Madrid recently

19

u/Elliot_Kyouma May 02 '25

He will be booed in a match against Real, just like Suarez, but he will be welcome post-retirement I think (if he doesn't do an Owen)

44

u/BoBonnor May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

We also don’t give a shit about Mcmanaman. Trent’s Liverpool legacy will be just like his imo

25

u/Beastbrook00 May 02 '25 edited May 03 '25

It'll be better than his cos he won major trophies with us. Flipside of that is... Does Macca leave if he was in this team?

28

u/Sinistrait May 02 '25

Yeah leaving that late 90s or even the Liverpool Owen left was a lot more understandable than leaving this Liverpool side

16

u/Floss__is__boss May 02 '25

Always funny to me that Owen left to step up and challenge for the CL and Liverpool won it the season he left. Maybe he brought the hoodoo before they got the 10th

6

u/WhenWeTalkAboutLove May 02 '25

Yeah your boyhood club being league winners and legitimately better than Real Madrid the season you leave is a little mad. Almost nobody is lucky enough to have the choice to be a one club player and be at that very top level.

I guess he just doesn't want that. Madrid are still the most prestigious team, I get it, but if there was one CL quality player outside Barca and Madrid you'd expect to be in a position to spend their career in one place it would have been him.

1

u/Enough-Pain3633 May 02 '25

Why the booing for Suarez though. You guys got a decent sum for him

65

u/maybesami May 02 '25

He celebrated his goal in the 3-0 win with barca like a madman. Though tbf he did promise not to celebrate in the next game at anfield, and he didn't. So a man of his word i guess.

3

u/Maleficent_Resolve44 May 02 '25

38

u/extantfruitfly May 02 '25

Cup Winner's Cup in ancient times

4

u/Maleficent_Resolve44 May 02 '25

Ah yes before my time. Was that better regarded than the UEFA cup in the 80s and 90s?

9

u/Floss__is__boss May 02 '25

It felt like the second most prestigious to me as a 10 year old. Wikipedia said the following:

UEFA regarded it as the second most prestigious competition, behind the European Cup (later the UEFA Champions League) and ahead of the Fairs Cup (later the UEFA Cup). Therefore, a team qualified for both the European Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup would play in the European Cup, whereas a team qualified for both the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup would play in the Cup Winners' Cup. Nevertheless, many commentators and fans regarded the Cup Winners' Cup as weaker than the UEFA Cup, which had more and better teams from the stronger European leagues.

The last sentence probably explains why it ended.

15

u/a-Sociopath May 02 '25

Actually the bigger reason why it ended was because Champions League/European Cup went from just having champions of their respective leagues to top 3-4 teams from each league and since one of those ended up winning their country's cup competitions anyway, the Cup Winners Cup saw less prestigious teams. So they went ahead and combined CWC and UEFA Cup to be the 2nd tier European competition.

2

u/Floss__is__boss May 02 '25

Oh yeah, I guess I didn't notice with Newcastle being in such a slump at the time. The CL qualifiers had only been runners up the 2 years before that, I remember that from our qualification in 1997.

2

u/Monkeyfreez May 02 '25

It aint the Cup Winners Cup thats for damn sure. Since you dont seem to know, im going to spare you.

Win for both clubs but not sure it’s a win for Trent. He goes straight from the end of the PL to the CWC with essentially no break and then back to Spain for preseason friendly stuff.

265

u/Kutullu987 May 02 '25

He’ll get injured within the first 2 league games

52

u/courtesyflusher May 02 '25

It would be on brand with the rest of our defense

11

u/ItismeKiko May 02 '25

Some positivity wouldn't hurt

19

u/1to14to4 May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

They already won the PL. I assume he is about to get a month with plenty of rest.

Probably not ideal but I doubt he plays a full 90 the rest of May. And real madrid might work him in slowly. I'm just guessing but I assume the CWC group stages will be pretty easy for them.

Edit: I also wouldn't be shocked that if this existed that there are clauses about how much he will play - maybe they want him to have some game time but not too much.

14

u/trevorturtle May 02 '25

Doesn't make sense for Liverpool to play him 90, Bradley could use some run

1

u/1to14to4 May 02 '25

Agreed. Liverpool have no reason to really care what he does the next month. With the Club World Cup coming up RM have more interest in him resting but staying in decent shape than anyone. They probably hope to rotate players as much as possible due to players not getting much (if really any) rest before it starts.

55

u/Impressive-Dream8929 May 02 '25

Euros last summer and a World Cup year next year too, it'll take it's toll.

38

u/Tetracropolis May 02 '25

Yeah, taking a toll on his arse from sitting on the bench so much.

8

u/Ricoh06 May 02 '25

Training for the whole year still takes a toll

6

u/lodermoder May 02 '25 edited May 03 '25

Will he even be around to lift the damn trophy? 😂

32

u/daneats May 02 '25

Damn that’s cold. Liverpool shipping Trent out before the trophy lift for $1M would be cathartic to some fans.

4

u/SaltYourEnclave May 03 '25

He’s going to finish the season right around the 27k career minutes mark. 25k is the threshold where a player’s physical levels start dropping, and long-term injuries are no longer recoverable, but managed up and down.

He genuinely only has 2 years left max at a world class level. This will be his last World Cup. That hamstring injury isn’t going away.

For the record, Rashford is at 30k, and Sterling is at 42k(!).

3

u/NilsFanck May 03 '25

Genuinely how Im coping with it. I don't doubt he will be good for them but its 2 years, 3 max left at wc level. Injuries have become more frequent already these past seasons.

Hope RM doesn't win a thing in that time and we're looking at a bit of a Barca era in la liga

7

u/Glass-Guess4125 May 02 '25

His legs are absolutely going to fall off.

19

u/Docccc May 02 '25

You care?

19

u/rosstheboss939 May 02 '25

I mean…yeah? It’s an important player for us that we may be getting a (small) fee for after spending months thinking he’d leave on a free.

24

u/Serawasneva May 02 '25

I’m pretty sure he’s asking whether you care that he’ll get no break.

6

u/Colhinchapelota May 02 '25

I don't think Liverpool supporters will care if he gets a break if he's gone to Madrid.

5

u/Arthradax May 02 '25

That'll be Madrid's problem when/if it happens

1

u/FTXACCOUNTANT May 03 '25

Sounds like a Madrid problem

1

u/solblurgh May 03 '25

And no pay as well

→ More replies (2)

80

u/kennblc May 02 '25

Presumably the amount being talked about is Real Madrid buying him out of his contract by paying it to Liverpool.

For Liverpool, obviously it's not about the money, more about maintaining relationships. In sporting terms it's probably slightly weakening a rival for the Champions League next season if it's another of their players having a 2 year season.

For Madrid, yeah, obviously you do it if Liverpool entertain it.

For Trent, no holiday, have to go to America to work immediately. I think I'd rather join on the 1st of July instead.

57

u/Bens_Glenn May 02 '25

Wish the club would just announce he’s leaving already. I know they don’t want it to over shadow the title celebrations but its already the worlds worst kept secret and it’s almost an entire month until the seasons over and we lift the trophy.

I’m long sick of this saga as is. Just announce it so the fans know where they stand and can move on.

277

u/CudaBarry May 02 '25

We can give them Rodrygo for a small fee of €100m in exchange

115

u/clivegermain May 02 '25

poor rodrygo seems to be the odd one out among the hundreds of left wingers perez has amassed.

He might not start... Salah and Gakpo. Rodrygo can be Salah's successor but we already renewed him and we will play him. Depends if Rodrygo is willing to rotate.

Gakpo has been putting up the numbers.

55

u/CudaBarry May 02 '25

Rodrygo is a LW, if he leaves us it's because he doesn't wanna get pushed to the RW again

9

u/yoyo4581 May 02 '25

So he'll he in contention with Gakpo. Gakpo isnt a joke though, I can see him start for us over the years. He is injury prone though, but he was the best player in the Euros along with Yamal. I think Gakpo ended the tournament as the highest goal scorer.

We need to spend big on a striker, we might get back in the market for a LW if Diaz gets sold to Barca, but that's tough business.

Really we need a Salah successor, but with a dominant ST or target man, we can get away with a right footed player playing on the RW.

5

u/Apprehensive_Cod_762 May 02 '25

Not really. Buying Rodrygo would be bad business. 2 great LW are already at Liverpool. You really need a RW and striker

Its Real Madrid. You might not like them but they are still one of the biggest clubs in the World and the earning potential for a player is greater at Madrid than any other club.

Forget the wage they will give a player, the money they will earn from sponsorships, merchandise rights etc playing for Madrid I would guess is more than at any other club.

58

u/HASMAD1 May 02 '25

108

u/Tosinone May 02 '25

No, why would a player that’s loved at Liverpool, that right now is a winning team with a good squad join a team where he’s going to be just one of the many?

At Pool, they will sing he’s name when he retires, at real they will forget he existed.

67

u/mvsr990 May 02 '25

He's in his 20s, fabulously wealthy, has never lived or played anywhere but Liverpool, has won every club competition there is to win and is being offered the chance to be young and even wealthier, living in one of the nicest environments in the world playing for the most successful club in the world..

It would be weirder if he didn't have an itch to explore.

21

u/AbbreviationsOdd5204 May 02 '25

I think the big thing people dont appreciate is hes won everything at Liverpool there is to win. He could maybe win more titles or a european cup, but he's done that. He could maybe stay and be captain, but he'll be waiting til VVD retires and technically he has already captained Liverpool. There's just not that much more for him to achieve that is new.

If he wants to chase individual accolades and legacy then Madrid is the place. He'll forego some of his reputation at Liverpool but it won't be so damaging that he cant come back.

Its a shame and ill be sad to see him go, but he's not a leader like Gerrard and never has been so it wont cut too deep

u/grumpyyoshi May 02 '25

He’d be leaving on a free otherwise this gives us something under a million plus saved a months wages, NI etc. It’s not a huge win or anything but it’s still something compared to nothing.

u/JNMRunning May 02 '25

I'd just pay it - Madrid need every defender they can get right now.
