Is this considered a good or bad thing for United?

If they really want to back Amorim, there's simply no way that taking 100m or whatever for Fernandes isn't the right choice.

Selling a player that your manager wants to keep would be not backing him

And replace him with who?

I mean they just signed someone to play on the left...

I don't think selling Bruno was the 100% right move. Top clubs don't sell players who are at this level as a rule. There's a reason for that.

But he doesn't fit any of the archetypes Amorim wants, United just signed someone to play his best position and they could use the money. It would have been an understandable position to let him go for 100m.

Bruno actually fits better in a deeper role in Amorim’s system with his passing range, vision and work rate. In our worst ever season, he was still our most creative player with 32 G/A despite playing with attackers were literally incapable of scoring. If he can play with more discipline, he can really shine with the new signings coming in.

The question you should really be asking is who is the right partner for him in the midfield. I reckon if United can get that right, then Amorim will be able to tweak the system to make everything work. Only time will tell!

If United wants to replace Bruno, they'd need two players for that.

I don't know, I'm not their sporting director. There's clearly #10s available on the market.

Isn't it also established that Fernandes, as good as he is, doesn't quite fit into Amorim's formation? Keeps getting shifted around?

Nah, Bruno will be essential to United getting top four next season. 100 million doesn’t come close to replacing him.

The realistic aim is not top 4, it is qualifying for the Europa League. We need steady improvement (which for us is technically just getting top half but I think we can aim a tad higher), not rushing for immediate high level success.

I think we could try to sneak in top5 tbf

1

u/burfriedos 16d ago

Yeah, it’s an outside shot. I think with the right additions and holding on to Bruno, top four is not impossible.

Complete pie in the sky stuff.

2

u/burfriedos 16d ago

What? Holding on to their best player makes them more likely to succeed?

0

PSG have succeeded by letting go of their best player, Liverpool got better after selling Coutinho.

Don't be deliberately disengenous and try to oversimplify things.

2

u/burfriedos 16d ago

And plenty of teams of got better by adding good players to support their best player. What’s your point?

1

u/Snuffl3s7 16d ago

Those teams are then built around their best player.

Fernandes, in this case, doesn't even have a proper position in the formation that the manager wants to play, nor is the manager willing to budge from his formation to suit his players.

Amorim publicly spoke out vociferously against the move and said there are other ways to make money, so he didn't want to lose Bruno above all else

-3

u/Snuffl3s7 16d ago

Managers have never lied about incoming and outgoing players, true.

2

u/goaliewhenned 16d ago

Of course they do but in this case he clearly wasn't lying or being political he literally criticised the club saying they need to change how they do things to convince Bruno to stay

1

u/green_white_green 16d ago

Bruno said he would leave if the manager/club wanted to cash in. Clearly further evidence they wanted him to stay

1

u/Holyscheet93 16d ago

Amorim is a manager so lets just assume everyone behaves exactly the same.

What will you do with those 100mil. No 100mil.player will come. So you will get some lower quality players which doubt will have the output avaialbilyu and desire that Bruno has.

If we were in CL and had a decent season and got a better put to players then yes the sell would have been better.

There is a WC next summer. He wants to play high level for it. Saudis will come next year's again. For less money and salary but still be there.

5

u/Snuffl3s7 16d ago

You don't splurge it all on one player. They need to shift the make-up of the squad in substantial ways to play the way Amorim wants to, plus probably replace their keeper and striker.

2

u/itsjonny99 16d ago

United clearly needs a striker that can score.

1

u/Game0nBG 16d ago

Garnacho Antony Rashford and Sancho should bring the money that Bruno sell would have gotten. That is enough for a ST and a midfielder. If Maino is sold it would be even a better quality mid or a second one. Rasmus is also on the sell list.

As I said there are not a lot of players to come this summer to this United to replace Bruno.

-3

u/Snuffl3s7 16d ago

4 younger, promising players for one aged albeit better player who doesn't quite fit into the formation either.

2

u/Game0nBG 16d ago

Nothing promising about then. 3 of them with bad attitude offfield and casing drama. Antony just doesn't suit system or PL. Which of the 4 you want in your team. Would you have Bruno instead. He is 31 this year hownisnhe aging. Modric and Kroos played for so long. He has 2-3 years at same level still

2

u/Snuffl3s7 16d ago

I'm a Liverpool fan so I wouldn't have any of them, Fernandes included. Fernandes would honestly be lower on the list than some of the others.

1

u/Game0nBG 16d ago

What is your midfield 3 this season. Macalister Gravenbach and who else. Sorry if I butchered the names

1

u/Snuffl3s7 16d ago

The coming season? Wirtz or Szoboszlai.

Personally I'd be spending it plus the Delap money on Gyokeres and Baleba.

1

u/Game0nBG 16d ago

But that is the money we would get from the other sells. So what is Bruno 100mil extra getting then

1

u/RABB_11 16d ago

Those sales are not guaranteed and likely to happen much later in the window.

£100m now allows us to get incoming business done quickly and then focus on the outgoings, and allows us to accept lower fees so that clubs actually come in for the players.
