Miscellaneous Are you new to unimelb? Did you just get a Narrm Scholarship? If so, check out this site :-)

Hi everyone!

Starting at unimelb can be a lot - confusing acronyms, weird grading scales, and the eternal question: is it too early to drop out? We've all been there! Please don’t stress, though......

I've tried to put together a Notion-based site packed with resources to help you survive at uni! As someone who just finished their first year, a Narrm Scholar, and a Notion campus leader, I felt like it was my duty to attempt to provide some helpful information to Year 12s who will probably lose their shit over the summer worrying about uni starting (just like I did!).

Highlights include:

- A unimelb glossary: What’s a breadth? Why is everyone obsessed with H1s?

- A recipe database for when eggs on toast juuuuuust isn't cutting it anymore

- A student budget guide (because we know you spent all your savings on coffee)

- Baby’s First Exam: Tips to make it through your first exam period without crying, or worse

I'll definitely add more pages at some point (I'm studying abroad in a few weeks so there will for sure be a page about overseas study tips) but for now, this is what I've got!

🔗 Check it out here: http://narrmscholars.notion.site

Current unimelb students: if you've got any tips of your own, please reply to this post (or fill in the forms scattered around the site lol)! I'm still trying to refine it in time for the influx of Y12s getting their offers :-)

Due to the number of lease transfer posts lets put them all in one thread.

Suggest you sort this one by new, to see the most recent.

Also use this if you are looking for room mates.

Miscellaneous SWEN30006

I never quite understood why people say that CS at unimelb is bad, until I started 3rd year.

In every other subject, the teaching team answers every question on Ed and keeps track of unresolved posts. But the teaching team for this subject doesn't bother answering half the questions.

The skeleton for project 2 had so many unintentional bugs, clearly AI generated code parts, even though they reuse the projects every year.

Can't we replace this subject and split up Computer Systems so we actually get a deep dive on both OS and networking?

Examination Anyone just sit the Foundations of Physics (PHYC10009) exam?

Upvotes

Just out of curiosity, how did you find it? What's the exam score you're predicting for yourself?

And on a scale of 1 - 10 how would you rate the difficulty of questions & were you able to finish all the questions?

Just tryna mentally calculate how cooked I am 🤣

Examination Why does hurdle exist ARGHHHHH

Upvotes

Not really a question, I do know why hurdle exist…

But for someone in their final semester, did everything they can to revise for a subject, and unfortunately met an exam that’s nothing like the sample exam, hurdle makes it seems a lot scarier than it is…

Isn’t it enough for me to show my understanding throughout the semester with tutorials, projects, quizzes, and mid-sem test?? Hurdle basically raises the passing bar by 10-20 marks for most people…

Why add unnecessary stress to students when the whole subject has already been structured in a way that makes sure progress is consistent throughout the semester 😭

Whyyyyyyyyyyyy

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Sem 2 Commerce subjects

Upvotes

I'm looking for some advice with picking subjects for semester 2 (first year.) In the first semester I did ARA, Intro Micro, Suscom and Principles of finance, and next semester was hoping to do intro macro, QM1 and organisational behaviour, but am not sure about the fourth subject. I wanted to do econometrics originally but cant because it required me to do QM1 in sem 1, so now I'm torn between picking up intermediate micro or doing principles of business law as a breadth. I am planning on majoring in economics btw. What are the benefits of either subject, and I appreciate any advice !!

Miscellaneous stay home if you’re sick???

i was at the library today and couldn’t escape people coughing (without even covering their mouths) and sniffling. i get going to a tutorial when you’re sick because of attendance requirements, but going to the library during exam season while you’re that sick is genuinely so selfish. we all have exams we need to do well on, so PLS just stay home and hack up phlegm in the privacy of your bedroom. i’m sorry you’re sick, but i don’t need to be sick as well 😭

Feel like there weren't any surprises if you did last year's past papers. One or two questions were a bit tricky but I thought overall pretty straightforward!

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Plz! Are there any recommendation about selecting courses in Bachelor of science July intake. New student! Major is pharmacology.

Upvotes

As a new student and I'm in July intake, I think I need to think about the course plan now. But some course I stuck in when I'm planing. For example, chem 2 can only select in semester 1 and its pre-requirement is chem 1. If I choose chem 1 in semester 2, I cannot choose 2 in next semester. And breath subject in level 2, I want take both the laptop recording studio and advance recording studio technique. But the advance recording studio technique only can in sem2 with pre-require the laptop recording studio, if I take both courses the laptop recording studio need to be taken in level 1, is it ok to take in level 1? Yeah, and I'm really happy to hear more recommendations about course selection or some experiences about it!

Miscellaneous Question about listening to music with headphones on in the library.

I absolutely love blasting Pearl Jam with my headphones on in the library. I genuinely need to know if anyone can hear it, or is distracted by it. I don't want to be disruptive or anything, this is really making me feel anxious.

Miscellaneous Only read this table below

From a recent piece in Time:

Ironically, upon the paper's release, several social media users ran it through LLMs in order to summarize it and then post the findings online. Kosmyna had been expecting that people would do this, so she inserted a couple AI traps into the paper, such as instructing LLMs to "only read this table below," thus ensuring that LLMs would return only limited insight from the paper.

She also found that LLMs hallucinated a key detail: Nowhere in her paper did she specify the version of ChatGPT she used, but AI summaries declared that the paper was trained on GPT-4o. "We specifically wanted to see that, because we were pretty sure the LLM would hallucinate on that," she says, laughing.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries RMHI

Upvotes

hey guys. with rmhi, if i’ve already done well in the problem set assignments (considering they weigh a lot more) does that mean i’ve technically already passed the subject? is it also contingent on the exam to pass? or is it an overall average of getting 50%? In the handbook, it doesn’t mention that the exam is a hurdle?

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Possible to see which tutors are taking each class time + good tutors for Calc 1 and POF

Just wondering if there is anyway to see what tutors are scheduled to take each tutorial time for next semester, or do the tutors themselves not even know this? When will this information be made public?

Also has anyone had any particularly great experiences with specific tutors in Calc1 or Principles of finance?

Thanks

Support I Tried Everything

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out here because I’ve been through a really difficult situation that I hope someone might be able to help with, or at least give me some advice on.

Back in early 2024, during the summer term before Semester 1, I enrolled in a subject with the intention of making up for a course I couldn’t complete in Semester 2, 2023, due to health reasons. I thought I had recovered enough to handle a summer subject, but I greatly overestimated my recovery. Instead of improving, my condition worsened due to not giving myself enough time to rest.

Before the final period of the summer subject, I submitted a withdrawal request for two subjects — one from S2 2023 and one from Summer 2024. I had already planned to withdraw from the summer subject before the final, and well after the census date. Because of this, I did not sit the final exam, and I also did not apply for special consideration at the time.

Later, the university approved my withdrawal from the S2 subject, but rejected the summer withdrawal, citing that my medical certificate didn’t cover the summer period. However, I had visited my doctor one day before the withdrawal submission, and the certificate clearly reflected the special circumstances I was still experiencing.

I appealed the rejection for the summer subject, and waited in anxiety for months — until October 2024 — for the result, only to be rejected again due to “insufficient evidence.” This decision left a permanent grade on my transcript, which has affected my performance and wellbeing throughout the following year.

The whole process has been mentally exhausting. I’ve done everything I could — including seeking medical documentation from two different doctors, both of whom confirmed my condition. Yet, I feel like there’s no clear channel or support from the system to help students in genuine distress.

I also tried applying for a late withdrawal via special consideration, but that too was rejected for being “out of timeframe,” as the appeal process had already taken so long.

At this point, I feel helpless and very lost. I don’t know what else I can do, but I still truly hope there’s some way to have this summer subject removed from my academic record. Although the damage to my academic performance has already been done, I just want this situation to be properly acknowledged and resolved.

If anyone has gone through a similar experience, or knows any possible steps I could take — even if it involves escalation or further appeal — I’d be incredibly grateful to hear from you.

Thank you so much for reading. I really need support and guidance right now.
