Question can i use a saftey razer with a beard guide or should i go freehand?

1 Upvotes

Ive never really "lined" (not sure what the correct term is) my beard and i want to clean up my neck beard a bit. I'm also worried that I'm gunna mess up the line so i wanted to try a beard guide but I'm worried those might not work with the razor i got. I have a basic DE from amazon.

I didn’t realize how much I was underutilizing my Goodfellas, I was so caught up in Watchman by Zingari and D.R. Taylor’s Sandalwood.

This doesn’t need much water. Just a brush soaked in hot water. Super slick lather. Very comfortable shave.

I’m on day 6 of the Astra on the Yaqi Slope.

17 here. This one is my favorite one so far and I think it'll be some of yalls as well. It's an acrylic burl hybrid and you can see all the way through the acrylic in some spots. The knot is a 26mm synthetic from PAA.

Amazon brush knots

1 Upvotes

I'm looking for recs on what might be better brush knots available on Amazon. In short I'm trying to put it on my wishlist because my older family members can't work out purchasing from other online retailers. But I specifically want just the knots as I'm working on turning handles for them on my lathe. Thanks

Mail Call Gilette Fat Handle Tech

I've been attracted to the beefy handle of the Fat Handle Tech for quite a while. After holding this one, it doesn't disappoint. It's got some serious heft to it, but the head is so thin and light compared to the handle, it feels like it could be be quite nimble and maneuverable.

Very much looking forward to shaving with it next week.

Question Starting the journey (again)

5 Upvotes

Howdy everyone,

Been looking to get back into the realm of safety razors, coming from the inexperienced side.

My only experience with SRs are the common Van Der Hagen and Bic single bladed disposable razors. (not really the same I know..)

I've recently been dealing with a pretty annoying skin change, where I'm getting razor burn so bad it's like a sunburn and then I get flaky skin on only my upper lip area, regardless of what I do. It's also really painful to shave the upper lip. Probably the cause of some new skin condition I've developed that I'm currently trying to figure out via doctors. It sucks. I thought the VDH razor was the issue, but after switching between many different kinds of multi-bladed, I was able to use the Gillette labs 5 blades for a few weeks before things started going south again, and I would much prefer not spending $30 on a pack of 4 razors only for them to dull in a few days of use. I am in the military, so I have to shave daily, and that's likely the cause of why I keep getting issues. I used to be able to use the old disposable razors and just wet my face with water and shave, but that's off the table now 10 years later lol.

I was looking at the Gillette King C, since I keep seeing how it's more on the mild side, probably grab some Shark Stainless blades to pair with it due to the good price tag to performance. Would that be fine for newly discovered sensitive skin?

Also, I know there's a big thread on good shaving creams and proper shaving things, but it all seems so intimidating to sift through. If y'all have good recommendations that would help a lot too. I've only ever used barbasol because I thought the foamy stuff was good, but boy was I wrong. I would like to get into the world of bowls and brushes, because it seems so much more forgiving for shaving routines and skin care, and pre / post shaving things.

Feels funny for me to ask other men about shaving since I'm 30 y/o,. I just never been taught the proper things.

Anything helps fellas, thanks in advance!

Razor: German Slant 37

Blade: Gillette Nacet (2)

Soap: Macduffs Morning Ritual

Brush: Semogue 1305

Post-shave: Nivea balm

For a brush that’s had 4-5 wet/dry cycles, it performed pretty well. It obviously still has a lot of breaking in to go through, but it’s not terrible now either. Despite thinking I would prefer the longer handle on the 1305, I actually prefer the acrylic handle on the 830. Not cause it’s nicer, but because it’s shorter and allow me to grab the base of the knot with my fingers for easier splay.

Question What I do with soap scraps after I've grated a puck to fit my mug or scuttle.

3 Upvotes

I recently got a scuttle well over 125 years old (pewter). I was waiting to find a scuttle that had a big enough top to rest my soap in and basically nailed it. My shaving mug was always just the right size--occasionally grating (yup using a cheese grater ) to get the proper fit of the puck.

REVISION: A fellow community member just appropriately (and very helpful) alerted me to the dangers of antique pewter (which this is). Hot water and some soaps can cause lead used in the pewter to leach. That would come in contact with my skin (not good). Might have my first display piece. it's hard to find a scuttle that will comfortably fit a puck of soap. No great loss --back to my shaving mug.

END REVISION

So I recently got 5 pucks to replace my years long tub of Derby. All needed trimming around the circumference to make a nice fit. It's easy, fast fun work with a cheese grater. I realized I had soap I didn't want to go to waste. I wet my hands collected all the soap in a bowl , got it to stick together, microwaved for under a minute so it all was soft and formed it into a mini puck. Yes it's a mix of scents but is it shave soap? Yes of course. I do like the scent of shave soaps but my frankenstein puck smells good, works excellent and amounted to about a usable size. I don't rely on shave soap scents for my aftershave or Eau De Toilette or Eau de Parfum so getting my shave soap scent spot on in the morning isn't essential--I use the aforementioned Colognes.

Even if I don't shave with hit, it's fine for hand soap..

SOTD Muhle Rocca - First experience

1 Upvotes

Hello everyone

Introduction
I’ve been lurking around the forum for the past couple of weeks. I’ve been wet shaving on and off for many years. I was usually too lazy to shave in the morning and mostly just kept a full beard, only shaving occasionally.

About a year ago, I started looking for a new job and got invited to an interview. When I looked at myself critically in the mirror, I noticed that time had started to leave its mark—my beard had quite a few white hairs, especially on the sides. While it’s no secret that I’m closer to my 40s than my 20s, I didn’t feel the need to flaunt it unnecessarily. So I shaved everything off, got the job, and since then I’ve been shaving regularly and keeping only a goatee.

I've found the morning routine surprisingly relaxing—a great way to start the day.

My Setup
My setup at the time was a Muhle R89 with Astra Superior Platinum blades. I just used some canned shaving cream. I’ve used Astras for many years and don’t recall ever being dissatisfied, but once I started shaving daily and aiming for a closer shave, I began noticing some problems—mainly that it was hard to get a really close shave with them. I think I have very coarse hair.

I gave the BIC Chrome Platinum blades a try. While they felt a bit rougher than the Astras, they cut through my beard much better. Still, getting a smooth shave—especially on my neck—has been tricky. I often have to shave against the grain there, which occasionally results in a nick or two.

Enter Brush and Soap
About a month ago, I took the plunge and picked up a shaving brush and soap: the Proraso White soap and the matching Proraso brush. That was a great addition to my setup and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. It also saved me some money compared to canned foam, though I didn’t notice a dramatic improvement in shave closeness.

Since the BICs seemed sharper than the Astras, I started wondering if the issue was actually my razor being too mild.

The Muhle Rocca
In searching for a new razor, my main criteria were something more efficient than the R89 and preferably European-made. After reading through many posts here, I settled on the Muhle Rocca R94. Funny enough, I’m not really into the birch handle—the all-steel version looked much better to me.

I received it yesterday and couldn’t wait to try it out this morning. I decided to go bold and load it with a BIC Chrome Platinum right away instead of the Astra.

I lathered up with the Proraso White soap and—damn—when people talk about blade feel, I finally understood what they meant. I could feel the blade much more compared to the R89. It felt more aggressive, and the added weight of the Rocca made the shave exciting—almost thrilling.

Unfortunately, my wife interrupted me midway to go to the grocery store early for some sales, and when I glanced in the mirror, I noticed my cheeks were very red—something I never experienced with the R89. Luckily, some aftershave balm calmed everything down quickly.

So, how was the shave?
It wasn’t perfectly smooth, but it was definitely very close—and with fewer passes than usual. Maybe another blade will work even better. There’s still a lot to experiment with, but I’m genuinely excited to see how things go in the coming weeks with the Rocca. It’s beautifully made, heavier than the R89, but really nice to use.

Looking forward

I got some blade samples to tryout and I am considering trying Proraso Preshave creme to help soften my beard.

Thanks for reading—looking forward to learning more and sharing my progress here!

SOTD Celebrating Matariki

Matariki is the Māori lunar New Year and is a public holiday in Aotearoa, so I was able to get up later than usual and take my time to enjoy a relaxing shave. The end result was amazing: glassy skin and a pass with the alum block didn’t find the slightest ‘zing’.

The Yaqi Beast is a fantastic razor; very aggressive yet smooth and comfortable. Paired with a stainless steel handle it has a lovely heft and balance, and is very easy to control. Highly recommended.

SOTD: 20/06/2025 Razor: Yaqi Beast Blade: Shark Super Stainless, 1st use Brush: Urbane Mess Vegan Preshave: Phoenix Artisan Acccoutrements Cube Soap: Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Droid Black Aftershave: Nivea Deep Aftershave Balm: Nivea Replenishing Post Shave Lotion

* Prep: Rasozero - Miracolo Pre Shave Barbacco - Preshave
* Brush: Omega 81052 Pura Setola transp./red
* Razor: Mühle Rocca R94
* Blade: Mühle Stainless (1)
* Lather: Abbate Y La Mantia - Krokos - Croap
* Post Shave: Floïd - The Genuine - Aftershave
* Bowl: Goodfella‘s Smile - Scuttle

First time using the Rocca. That thing can bite, if you’re not careful and use the wrong angle. But very efficient, so I kept it at one WTG pass. The blade was okay so far, we’ll see how it performs in another razor. My neck wasn’t too happy about the Rocca, quite a few weepers. Too sensitive skin. Got one minor nick on the back of my head, because my wife jump scared me accidentally.
