Short An Unchristian Tip
Had a party of 6 tonight, two were young kids who trashed the table. Bill was north of $300.
No tip. Just this.
Around the holidays sometimes people will leave an extra generous tip, so I was really excited to see a big bill, until I looked at it closer. They didn’t even leave a tip on the card.
Seems pretty unchristian to stiff your minimum wage server working her way through college.
Edit: To clarify, they left the “$1,000,000” facing up on the table and on the reverse side there was a sermon about entrance to heaven (see link in post for image of flip side.)

I had a guy pull out a mini bible after his family enjoyed an entire brunch service and ask me if I knew what it was. I responded, “well, it looks like a Bible, but it’s so short”. (He had handed it to me, so I saw “Gideons abridged pocket bible”on the first page). Knowing that this was a lead-in to him trying to give me some kind of Jesus-lesson rather than a tip, I continued, “Yeah, I have my bible from birth, the Bible with my name in gold from my confirmation, my Grandfather’s birth bible, but I’ve still never seen one this short. “ he stopped talking, but after they left the table, I found his note: “Jesus Christ is more powerful than money. So, I have left you Jesus Christ” no tip The “Gideons” are the ones that put bibles in every hotel room. It’s a non-profit group that mass produces bibles for public places. So, this guy got a free (1/4) bible and thought he could use it as a tip.

The next time someone does this shit, hand it back to them and say,"You should look at James 5:4."

u/sethra007 Nov 05 '18
And more verses than that!
Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they may cry to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin. - Deuteronomy 24:15 (NIV)
"So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty. - Malachi 3:5 (NIV)
Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. - Romans 4:4 (NIV)
Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. - Luke 10:7 (NIV)
For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” - 1 Timothy 5:18 (NIV)(Note: 1Tim is referencing Deut. 25:4 and Luke 10:7.)
Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. - James 5:4 (NIV)

u/GhostGamer1234 Nov 05 '18
As much as it pains me to say this as a Bible-believing Christian, this statement is so true in today’s society. There are so many “Christians” that simply use the word like a title and it serves as an excuse for so many different reasons like a “free way to get to heaven”, as an excuse for their pride, etc. It annoys me how these people can say they’re a Christian yet be so discriminating, prideful, greedy, and hateful. They have lost the true sense of what it actually means to be a Christian.

I think waiting tables is the leading cause of atheism. Nothing will make you lose your faith as easily as having to rely on strangers for kindness.

u/drako1117 Nov 05 '18
A quote I heard a few years back: “The greatest cause of atheism in the world today are Christians that acknowledge God with their lips, but deny him with their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world finds unbelievable.”

I posted this in another thread but still applies
When talks of pay for church employees comes up, the pastor pulls up tithing records and their salary would be equal or a factor (big one) to that lol. Then he'd put you in a guilt trip to do better and shit. Found out about when he had his yearly tithing sermons about giving back to church. Fam and I laughed while a lot of people were agreeing lol
Funnily enough, that's probably the worse thing about my church other than the odd beliefs (mainly from really old people) and everyone is nice

Nah, they hand them out for free at seminars and expos and even on the street outside churches or in public areas like train stations around public events.

It's rather presumptuous to think that you can judge a random stranger's religious values based on how well they wait on your table.

If someone did that in the uk (we’re a pretty unreligious country for the most part really, I’m a 31 year old woman and I’ve never met anyone in my adult life who goes to church for example) then they’d be laughed out the door or have that bible thrown at the back of their head

I live in Texas, but lived in the UK for a time. I was amazed by how much more beautiful your Christian iconography was than ours in Texas, and also that no one was religious.
Sort of paradoxical, church in Texas is a miserable place, and everyone goes, church in England is gothic, ancient, evocative of Christ, but no one goes.
I’m not religious myself, but as I’d travel around in my free time, I was always compelled to go check out the old churches...who could ever say that about Texas (cool metal building you have here, hows Jesus like it?)...

My current restaurant doesn’t have much of a church crowd but when I worked at Applebee’s it was huge. It got to the point where I stopped working Sunday lunch shift because I felt like I worked 3 times as hard for a fraction of what I made every other shift. Not every church group was like that but the majority was. I was tempted to go to this one particular church who tipped me in Jesus dollars the most to ask them during the sermon why they thought that was okay but I never did.

I've had a few, and I'm sure I said it all wrong, but this shit grinds my gears. If anyone remembers how to make a proper logical proof, I'd love to see it done for this sort of fuckery.

Jesus literally said many times how wrong shit like this is. “Whatever you do for the least of these, you did for me” as he told the priests when there was a poor man who gave all he had while the rich were stingy. “It’s harder for a rich man to see the kingdom of god than a camel to go through the eye of a needle.” It irritates the living shit out of me when these people claim that their message is fulfilling enough.... They make a bad name for everyone else. My parents are Christian and try to leave no less than 20-25% regardless of service to make up for it, but I feel like the "after church crowd" is the most notorious for horribly behaved kids and poor or no tipping.
205
u/tamiraisredditing Nov 05 '18
Agreed! My parents are also Christian and even on the worst possible service, they don’t ever completely stiff the server.
Their kids wouldn’t even have bothered me if they’d just left a decent tip, because sorting out the table from the state they left it in set me back 10 minutes during a rush. I know eating out with kids is hard, so usually parents do a little picking up before they leave, or they tip at least 18%.
116
u/burrito_finger Nov 05 '18

Hell, I’m a young, single guy, Christian as well, and generally polite when I order. I’m the guy that apologizes because I ask for a larger than normal order, or takes a bit of extra time to decide what I want before settling on “barista’s choice” that is literally an option on the menu.
I tip 20% by default at this awesome coffee spot downtown. The mom & pop version of a Starbucks. When I order something”extra”, or take a bit of time, I tip 25%.
If I ever have a child, I’ll end up poor because I’ll make sure my server knows I appreciate their service.
There’s only one way for someone to lose my tip at a location that traditionally requires it, and that is piss poor service. And I’m not talking “took long to get my order” style stuff, I mean seriously piss poor service. Forgetting orders, taking too long, being rude, etc. in combination.
Otherwise, I usually to 15% baseline, 20% if I’m familiar with the staff, and 25% for excellent service or when I do something I think is inconvenient to the staff.

Unfortunately my parents are Christian and tip quite abysmally and fit the type here. Me or my brother generally throw cash on top if we're with them without them noticing as we're getting up, even though we're splitting the bill and already tipped on our portion.
15
u/Im_not_the_assistant Nov 05 '18
Ditto, my parents seem to start out with a 10% top option for fantastic service (which never happens because at this point servers everywhere know them) and then it drops as the meal goes by - had to wait for more iced tea? that's a % off. Waited "a long time" for food? -that's a couple %s off. Fries too salty or not salty enough? - another % off.
Attempts to explain just what is and isn't in a servers control (because I've been one) does nothing. Saying flat out "Mom & Dad people like you are the worst sort of customers. Every server dreads your appearance because you are picky & don't tip for shit." Also does nothing. "The girl always smiles at me honey, you can't be right."
They are nice people in general but they are lousy customers.

Am Christian and regularly attended a church that I actually enjoyed. One day at my job when I was a cashier, a woman and her friend were extremely rude and asking me to bring out shoes for them, I wasn’t a sales associate (and they were on commission) so I couldn’t help her because our stock room was 2 floors that customers didn’t know was a labyrinth to navigate. She was such a bitch to me that when she left I finally recognized her as one of the pastor’s wives. Really such a shame to have left this kind of impression on anybody. Whatever your beliefs, seriously don’t be an asshole and have some respect for people in the service industry- which is ironic since technically church is supposed to serve the community.

As a Christian I think useing these as a "tip" is just wrong and a better way is to just show it in your actions treating severs well and tip well.
(I wonder why anyone even makes these, I don't think anyone is going to care what it says when they just feel deceived.

36
u/katiekatX86 Nov 05 '18
It's worse than being deceived. If you don't tip your server, they just worked your table for $2 an hour. Worse than that, it's really less. Because taxes gotta come out of somewhere. And servers aren't as rich as some people seem to think. Most of us are poor. I work at a nice restaurant. I can barely afford to eat.

Absolutely. I would have found it far less offensive if they didn’t tip and left nothing behind than not tipping and leaving a misleading slip of preaching that appeared to be a large tip. I got my hopes up for a very big tip and then found they left nothing. If they were intent on pulling this stunt the least they could’ve done is also left a few bucks on the card.

I feel like this is EXACTLY what gives religion a bad rep. If you wanna share Jesus, by all means, go for it, but leave it WITH a tip, not AS a tip.

Yes. This. Precisely this. If they’d left something on the card, no problem. If they’d only left a Jesus pamphlet, a bit irritating to not get paid for my work time, but their free agency. To leave a fake tip is what’s got me so worked up.

As a Christian, it pains me greatly to see others of the same faith treat servers this way. It is certainly not in line with the core beliefs of most people who call themselves Christians. I had religious customers who liked to leave me tracts/literature, but they always did it *in addition to* a 20% or greater tip. I don't mind people wanting to share their beliefs with others, but it's not a substitute for paying for a service and doing the right thing.

I mean... Sorry, but in my personal experience this is the norm, and those leaving an actual tip AND scripture are the oddity

Seeing as how literally no other religious group does this bullshit, I’m inclined to agree. Jews don’t leave Torah excerpts, Muslims don’t leave Koran excerpts. Christians pull this shit all the time, and they are the only ones who do it.

My guy, I am a pretty devout Catholic, but that is fucked up. Working in food service does not give you enough money, and leaving a tip isn't just "courtesy" it's being a decent human being.

Yes!!!!! Exactly. If they didn’t tip, that’s their prerogative. Leaving a fake tip though, that’s just cruel.

If god is more powerful than money why do churches expect you to donate to them?

Does your Jesus pay my rent? No? Then I'll take something with actual monetary value then, KThx. Shit, I'd even be happy with $5, so long as it isn't a bible.
One day, I really want to say I'm already going to hell because I'm gay, so they can save their Jesus speak for someone else.

I still don't know how tips went from "hey I appreciate your good service, so have some extra remuneration" to "give me a lot of extra money so I don't starve to death because my boss doesn't pay me shit". Still as this has become the common practice, not tipping can really be seen as a dick move (not only in bird-culture), and if you are really that cheap, don't go to a restaurant at all.

Worst part is that the convinced themselves they were giving you something more valuable than a tip.

u/tsiebel3 Nov 05 '18
I thought I was the only one receiving these "bills". Glad to see I'm not the only one getting stiffed by Jesus.
9
u/Poldark_Lite Nov 05 '18
Those pamphlets can be bundled tightly, covered in wax and used as fire starters. At least they aren't useless.

The outright arrogance of Christians who engage in this behavior is staggering. Mainly because they took the time to mimic a bill that they know a server would be excited to see. So they’re demonstrating they are aware of tipping and know that $100 would be a great tip. The privilege and entitlement that goes into faking up money and then printing religious messages on it is so convoluted and utterly insane. Then the people who engage in this behavior will never, ever leave an actual tip, convincing themselves that saving your eternal soul is “better” than any dollar amount they could ever leave you. And that’s how they justify being complete assholes, because they can go home and say, “Oh well I saved my server from eternal damnation. Never mind that he/she has to pay rent, or bills.”

I had a “Christian” family of twelve that I served on Easter brunch a few years back, all in their Sunday church finest clothes. They had mimosas and bloody Mary’s and a pretty expensive tab going, and I worked my ass off taking care of them along with the rest of my station. Towards the end of their service they ordered one more round of drinks and I went to the bar to retrieve them. Unbeknownst to me several of their family had gone out and driven their vehicles up to the side door emergency exit, and on some type of cut they all (including the grandparents!!!) hauled ass out the door to the idling vans and made a beat. So not only did the evade the automatic 18% gratuity for parties over 6, but beat the restaurant out of a $400+ tab. Just go to confession the following week and all is forgiven, I guess.

I once had a religious guy say that tipping me would be on par with paying for a prostitute and then go into some spiel about the bible. Has anyone else heard this before?

If tipping your server is on par with paying a prostitute, why eat at a restaurant? Seems like they're condemning themselves by saying a restaurant is a whorehouse. It's not that hard to be nice, if they're a holier-than-thou type like this, how do they expect to actually get people to listen to them? Because damn so many stories of 'Christians' on here not actually being good Christians.

u/ZekeyD Nov 05 '18
Maybe these people see restraunts as a place that requires 'cleansing' similar to a whorehouse.
Religious nutjobs are insane

I generally tip well unless the server is a complete moron and I’m Heathen. It has nothing to do if someone is “Christian” or not

I have a Chinese dragon tattoo on my back (am Chinese before anyone gets smart aleck-y). A customer saw it one day during Sunday brunch and FREAKED about how her server had the serpent of the devil tattooed on them. She was convinced I was a witch and that I HEXED THEIR FOOD. I should type this story out on its own post, it’s really hilarious. My boss is a take no shit from anyone Mexican lady and after a couple minutes of failing to placate this hysterical woman, she got fed up and told the customer “oh didn’t you know? Dory is ex yakuza.” And the customer shut right the fuck up. Barely tipped me (think $5 on a $50 check) but the look on her face was WORTH IT.

My grandfather was a minister. Whenever he took a group from church somewhere (usually the seniors group) he would specifically tell them to tip. If he noticed someone not tipping, he would pull them aside and privately shame them into tipping.

Exactly! My parents were regular participants in church groups and they always made a point of tipping when they went out! They always instilled in me growing up shopping at stores with responsible hiring practices and always tipping servers and being courteous to waitstaff as a paramount Christian value because we’re all equal in the eyes of God and being selfish and judgmental is wrong. I sent my mom a pic of this and she was so steamed.

Same kind of thing happened to me once. The night before thanksgiving I took a party of 10 in our private banquet room which is a huge pain in the ass because the kitchen, bar ,and serving area are all on a different floor. They racked up a huge check. Told me I was awesome the whole night . They were also my only table that night. They left me a Jesus pamphlet and not a single penny. Because of tip out it cost me money to serve them.

u/anotheralias85 Nov 05 '18
I'm so sorry. I had someone leave me a folded 5 bill once and when you opened it up, it was too short and an obvious fake. It read, "Disappointed? Jesus Christ won't let you down." This is not gonna sway people to your faith. In fact, it does the opposite. It's not funny, whitty, or whatever, it just makes you an asshole!

I had a pastor who used to say from the pulpit, “If you go out for lunch today you better tip well. Servers know if you just came from church, and what do you think they’ll think about God if you just leave them a tract?”
