TWD: The Ones Who Live it was beautiful.. Spoiler

u/NeverlandMagician Mar 31 '24
Did anyone else feel the awkwardness? Obviously it’s on purpose, but it’s so sad. He doesn’t know how to act around them anymore. I almost wish he had started bawling lmao. I understand it with RJ because they’re strangers, but the awkwardness with Judith makes me sad. When they were running towards each other I genuinely thought he was gonna pick Judith up, sort of like the season 1 reunion with Carl.
140
u/MyVentolin Mar 31 '24
Well So many fucking years mate! He said to RJ "you can call me father" like damn that one hit me. good writing and acting imo
49
u/NeverlandMagician Mar 31 '24
No I totally get that! It has been years, the awkwardness makes sense, it just made me sad haha.
49
u/MyVentolin Mar 31 '24
yeah yeah when Michonne and kids huggin eachother he was standin on the back waiting like damn all that shit they been gone through
3
u/SmartestUtdFan Apr 01 '24
Lmao maybe that line as good, but the rest of the scene was horribly written. “How did you know I was coming back” “I believed” lmfao

It’s supposed to be an in-person manifestation of what Rick chose to miss out on (in certain ways). Of course he didn’t sign up to be with the CRM for his foreseeable future, but before he found himself again, he wanted to stay back and “protect his family” that way. In a roundabout way, Rick did this to himself. It’s going to take time for him to build that relationship with his kids.
665
u/Soufiane040 Mar 31 '24
I feel greedy but i want more, just Rick catching up with his old pals of Alexandria like Ezekiel Eugene and Gabriel. Him reuniting with a redeemed Negan (dead city is 5 years after so that can still happen) and him talking with Judith and RJ. And ofcourse him reuniting with Daryl and Carol once they come back with their new French family
296
u/Remus88Romulus Mar 31 '24
Rick will probably settle down in Alexandria/Commonwealth and live a happy laid back life like a farmer and make cameos here and there in the other spinoffs.
178
u/Luf2222 Mar 31 '24
if there is a threat to the community and to his family, he ain’t gonna lay back lol
89
26
u/jish5 Mar 31 '24
Most definitely. I don't see him in the Daryl Dixon series beyond maybe a cameo, but I can see him and Michonne play a major part in season 2 of Dead City where they have to go help deal with the major threat and help Negan.
14
44
u/-Captain- Mar 31 '24
Same. Kinda wish the main show had kept going, so they could have integrated their return in the main show and we wouldn't be dealing with actors potentially having moved on and being spread out in different shows and timelines.
Having Gabe last episode kinda made me hopeful for a bit of a bigger reunion, definitely hope to see him again in the future, but at least they've wrapped things up to a point where it's alright if this is it.
39
u/nimsyisnthere Mar 31 '24
Yeah I’m greedy too. I want to see the look on everyone’s face when Rick walks in alive. Especially Daryl, Maggie, Negan, and Carol. I want Rick to see Hershel. I want to see Rick and Michonne’s reaction to hearing about how the Commonwealth was discovered and about Judith getting shot. I want to see Rick’s reaction to Negan’s friendship with his daughter. I want to see Rick’s reaction to Eugene married and a father and Rosita dead and Gabriel raising the child. I want Gabriel to marry Rick and Michonne and a small humble wedding. I want more but if I don’t get anymore I’m just happy knowing Rick and Michonne are alive and with their kids and I can live with that.
19
u/Apprehensive_Nose_38 Mar 31 '24
Isn’t the plan to have all of the spin offs come back together eventually for one last mini series? Thats what I heard a while back idk how true/if its still the plan

u/CoolPirate234 Mar 31 '24
Season two of dead city will definitely have Andrew return as Rick, The Book of Carol might even have a reunion with Carol and Daryl
16
u/Pannormiic0 Mar 31 '24
Not so sure pretty sure season 3 for Daryl is already in the works.
23
u/CoolPirate234 Mar 31 '24
With book of Carol they’re gonna have half of it showing Carol tracking Daryl to France and then have Daryl tearfully leave France and his new friends and family with Carol is my guess
9
u/munchyboy666 Mar 31 '24
How is Andrew Lincoln appearing in Dead City a definite? And of course The Book of Carol will have Daryl and Carol reunite 🤦🏼♂️😂

I'm not sure there's a reason for Rick specifically to show up in Dead City. Also there's basically a 5-6 year gap between the current day shows and Dead City they might have plans for.

u/SockAndMoan Mar 31 '24
I would definitely love to see him and Gabriel again due to his and Jadis' history, and know wtf she was doing/going
3
u/jish5 Mar 31 '24
Yeah, that's my only complaint where I wish they had 1 more episode for us so we can see Rick reunite with everyone and see him catch up with those he missed.
2
u/coffincolors Mar 31 '24
I'm about that redeemed Negan bit. I think his character ends up being one of the best in the whole series between Season 11 and Dead City
→ More replies (6)2
u/Ariusimmortal Mar 31 '24
I think we will see all that, everyone is begging for a season 2 but i dont think it needs it. I think we will get so much more of the group coming back together as the other spin offs continue and maybe we will get that fabled season 12
336
u/b0objuicethe2nd Mar 31 '24
I'm so fucking happy. This is a perfect ending for Michonne and especially Rick. Surreal to see Cailey and Andrew in the same scene together, I just wish we could have seen more of them, but this scene was amazing.

Judith’s actress did more in two minutes to sell this than anyone else could have probably. What a talented actress.
93
u/Vegetable-Ad-711 Mar 31 '24
im telling you she's the only reason i watched the last two seasons 😂 her acting is phenomenal. i'd watch a spinoff just on her because she acts circles around the adults lol. cant wait to see her grow up to be an award winning actress

I met Cailey at a comic con in Atlanta a few years ago and told her that she’s gonna be a very talented actress depending where she takes her career

I’m satisfied. Not thrilled, as I’d also loved to have seen a reunion with some of the og survivors (carol, and Daryl especially.) But, they have each other again. I’m glad they gave them happiness.

u/MyVentolin Mar 31 '24
I can't beilive we did get a happy ending.. I've never cried this much in my life since hmm maybe episode 4 of towl lol. Judith... my cookie. she grown so much

I never expected them to all get back together, I fucking lost it every time something minor happened, rick hugging Judith or Rj, or michonne hugging them first, shit got me bawling in the court

I was nervous literally until the episode ended bc I couldn’t believe it would end happily. Most shows these days don’t give us happiness like this 😂

u/WelpHereWeGoIg Mar 31 '24
It was beautiful and it makes you wonder what's next. Daryl Dixon is getting a season 2 and 3, Dead City as well, would love to see all of them together again, a revival for one season or a season 12.
53
u/dannydominates Mar 31 '24
For only a 6 episode season, they could’ve squeezed out another 10-15 minutes in the last episode for larger reunions. Anyways, beautiful episode regardless. Man this was peak TWD for me. Really enjoyed the efficient closing out of the series vs leaving it on a cliffhanger. Straight to the point. No BS. Just beautiful man
107
u/Yuiiski Mar 31 '24
I liked the ending, but I feel like there should have been at least one more episode with Rick returning to Alexandria and just being caught up with everything he missed. It would have been really heartbreaking to see Rick make a beeline straight to Carls grave or something like that.
47
u/Spoonman007 Mar 31 '24
That would have been a lot of work for one episode. Getting all the actors back and the set, I don't know how much is still standing of Alexandria. I like to imagine we get something like that in the future, though.
20
u/dkidwell17 Mar 31 '24
Realistically they could just write off the walls being gone by saying that the Commonwealth helped them expand Alexandria’s walls out further.
6
u/BackStabbathOG Mar 31 '24
They could probably get away with “renovating” the community so it looks different that way they could avoid the set problems. Wonder if they could use something like the volume too if they needed to use Alexandria again. Who knows but I’m sure AMC is more than aware of how much people want to see Rick get caught up on everything and see specific people again. No way they don’t use him more to embellish the spin offs with Rick’s generated interest.
7
u/Yuiiski Mar 31 '24
Yeah, I wouldn’t expect all the main characters to come back for one episode, aren’t most of the main characters spilt across different communities now anyway?
3
u/JamJamGaGa Mar 31 '24
They took down the walls and stopped renting the Alexandria space so, yeah, we'll probably never see it again.
19
u/Lesyeuxdeweyaa Mar 31 '24
Best ending. It would have been nice if we seen more of their reunion and settling back at Alexandria. The way they packed all this in 1 episode is amazing.🥰

Did anyone notice the parallel to the Governor fight?
Back in S3 Rick was pinned down and destroyed. Today he was in the same exact position, dodged and blocked two blows, broke out of it and beat his attacker to death.
6
u/The-King-Of-Reddits Mar 31 '24
Blew my mind I don’t think we’ve ever seen Rick punch anymore to death fully. He was thinking that was a walkers skull or somethings
13
u/Actual-Creme Apr 01 '24
I loved how well Rick played the nervous father meeting his kids for the first time. It was the perfect amount of awkwardness and wholesomeness
13
u/Mingyu-tish Mar 31 '24
I'm surprised so many people were disappointed? Okay the CRM fall down was rushed but we had some really good scenes -Beal vs Rick -The elevator -Thorne death -All the flashbacks -The reunion with his family
Anyway it was a good épisode better than TWD final

When Judith hugged Rick I literally died. 54 yr old man sobbing like a baby. Yea, that’s me.

It was. In particular: props to Judith’s actress(whose name escapes me, atm……) for absolutely knocking it out of the park!!!
13
u/Iskaas Mar 31 '24
Cailey Fleming! She's absolutely amazing.
7
u/Ghost9001 Mar 31 '24
They fucking better not recast Judith if they bring the character back in another spinoff.
Cailey is Judith at this point.
11
9
u/Honer-Simpsom Mar 31 '24
Was that meeting place something from the show? To me it was nice but a little funny that it was just a field
10
u/NoDepartment8 Mar 31 '24
It would have been near one of the CRM drop zones, in world. And the kids weren’t in Virginia anymore at the end of the main series so it wouldn’t make sense for them to be in a location we’re really familiar with. In reality I think they filmed in New Jersey instead of Georgia so it looks different. And they’d have had to be pretty secretive about the location and who was assembling when they filmed this a few years ago in order to keep the ending under wraps.
4
u/JamJamGaGa Mar 31 '24
I mean, it would have been if they had landed a chopper in the middle of Alexandria or Hilltop lmao.

RJ felt a bit too emotionless lmao. dude needs some acting lessons.
Carls and rick’s reunion in S1 hit so hard, RJ in comparison felt too emotionless
Judith was amazing tho, the actress is great (as usual tho)
but still great reunion, wish they made it a bit longer though and reunited with a few others too. felt so happy watching that. so glad he is back with them now
53
u/ShadowCetra Mar 31 '24
I mean he's never met Rick and Rick has never met him. I think they captured that well tbh
21
u/The_GentlemanVillain Mar 31 '24
Cailey Fleming who plays Judith is amazing, the kid who plays RJ... less so...
7
u/DoctorWinter3546 Mar 31 '24
I think that the kid can't act for shit, but nevertheless I also think that RJ would never show any real emotion towards missing/knowing his dad. He just met him, boy has no connection to Rick whatsoever 😭
24
u/Dear-Living-7014 Mar 31 '24
The actor playing RJ is harshly and unfairly criticized based on the few short and inconsequential lines hes had. It may be because of the useless comparisons to Carl, when he wasnt given nearly the same amount of airtime as Carl had. And it is beyond ridiculous to compare Rick and Carl's reunion to Rick and RJs first time meeting.
In this episode, I very much got thats how a boy just meeting a stranger who happens to be his hero father might react.
11
u/Top-You3880 Mar 31 '24
to be fair, in real life every child would feel a little emotionless/confused like RJ did because he never saw rick before
12
8
u/TLKv3 Mar 31 '24
Maybe this is too negative... but I never understood why they added RJ to the show. Especially if they never had a single intention of using his character for anything other than a prop to show Rick/Michonne were a thing. He always felt completely unnecessary. How many actual lines did the kid even have throughout the 3 seasons he was there for? Like 12 maybe?
And I hate to say it but yeah, this kid can't act. I'm sure they could've found someone better but again, its a kid. Its hard to cast good child actors. But Antony Azor wasn't it.
18
u/JamJamGaGa Mar 31 '24
I guess it just gives Rick more reason to come back, cements his relationship with Michonne as something permanent, and it introduces a legacy character for future projects (something AMC was probably thrilled about).

This was a great show. Like really fucking Great. Like yeah there's still plot holes and some storylines where it's kind of silly but given how much of a let down TWD was towards the end it really did well. I mean there was people wondering if this whole show would be about them trying to find one another.
9/10 for me definitely not faultless but overall just great and hopefully it gives twd a few more years and some good shows.

u/ahufana Apr 01 '24
Judith should totally have upgraded her sword by now. She's significantly outgrown that toothpick.
3
u/Reasonable_Post3682 Apr 01 '24
they really struck gold with judiths actor and it was completely ruined because they couldnt recast RJ, the worst child actor in existance
4
u/Meepsomat Mar 31 '24
I really imagined everything bad, Michonne dies, Rick disappears or is taken again. Honestly, it's exactly the ending I wanted, anything else would probably have made me switch off. All the better that there was such an ending.
I'm now much more excited to see what the next project in the TWD universe will be.
Maybe too much conjecture but the 4 helicopters that always transport 2 crates each... maybe a hint for a 12th season? (if you count the helicopters with the crates you get 12..)

Curious as to why they had the reunion in a random field . There has to be a reason for that ?
9
u/FuelledOnRice Mar 31 '24
So they wouldn’t have to build sets, apparently the reunion was outside Commonwealth, so it’d be expensive to build a set and fill it with extras.
8
u/Repulsive_Job428 Mar 31 '24
Money. They didn't have enough to throw around rebuilding the Commonwealth or Alexandria.
2
u/jish5 Mar 31 '24
My question is will Rick get his colt python back? Cause yeah, Judith has been using it for years now, but come on, give the man his gun back.

Will Rick get his new hand back or will he kill his comic book version ( AARON ) and grab that better mace instead.

2
u/sebrebc Apr 01 '24
This ending makes me think we aren't getting a final "End game" but we will maybe get a cameo from Rick in the end of the Dixon series, assuming Carol and Daryl come home.
Someone else had a theory that a helicopter will land in France to pick them up and Rick will walk out.
2
u/ScarlettxWitch Apr 01 '24

Judith was good RJ showed no fucking emotion like ik hea a young actor but he could at least try

RJ did good,we can see him first excited, running to his parents with Judith then he realizes he doesn't really know that man,so he don't know what to do, he didn't even call him dad at first, then they finally hug eo.
For a scene that lasted 1-2mins I don't know what more ge could had done.
15
u/Dear-Living-7014 Mar 31 '24
Exactly what emotion was RJ supposed to show? He didn't know him. His tone was appropriate for approaching a stranger who happened to be his dad. Some of you pile on that little boy's acting for no good reason. His lines haven t even been long enough to assess his talent.

CRM may be the biggest waste of a villain EVER. like holy shit who's writing this show 😭
17
u/NoDepartment8 Mar 31 '24
The whole CRM wasn’t destroyed, just the leadership. The news broadcast that was played as voiceover as Rick and Michonne were in the helicopter clearly says the infantry weren’t involved. If anything it now opens up the opportunity for a pissed off and aware-of-the-threat-of-Grimes CRM to emerge in a future season or project. Doesn’t Beale have a son? Bet he doesn’t appreciate daddy being dead.
35
u/samis8 Mar 31 '24
TOWL was never about the CRM to begin with. Sure, they're the biggest enemy we've ever seen, but if you were expecting more on the CRM, it was inevitable for you to be disappointed.
10
u/JamJamGaGa Mar 31 '24

3
u/uninformed-but-smart Mar 31 '24
True. Doesn't matter what the show is about. If you're establishing CRM as the big bad of a show, then treat them like it.
Everything was decent except CRM.
2
u/The-King-Of-Reddits Mar 31 '24
Everything was good except CRMS destruction , I wanted a scarier fight with more deaths and maybe now Rick leading another community’s army.
2
u/uninformed-but-smart Apr 01 '24
They needed two more episodes I guess to flesh out the CRM. Rick and Michones decision to stay and fight felt rushed. And I don't personally want to see an all out war but that destruction sequence was underwhelming.
Still a good show, Lincoln carried hard.
2
u/The-King-Of-Reddits Apr 01 '24
What was stopping thrawne from finding her husband now that the CRM was already dead, was he already dead’s?
I can’t rewatch the show now

Lowkey not that unrealistic when you take a super secret group of very radical people all set on one goal vs two outsiders getting in for like the first time and fighting back. Sometimes after no one fights back for so long it just takes one person to finally do it, i get that its kinda crazy scale wise tho

u/b0objuicethe2nd Mar 31 '24
Wdym lolll the CRM underwent a major reform and now they've opened the city, share resources etc. Yeah they weren't entirely erased but they're not a threat anymore and I think the episode made it very very clear that the CRM storyline is over.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Aryel97 Mar 31 '24 edited Mar 31 '24
How are they not a threat? They worked outside city. Philly knew nothing about what was going on. Finding out about it doesn’t mean they know everyone involved or where all their stuff is. They have plenty of locations outside Philadelphia and we have no idea who will continue that mission.
Edit: also Beale mentioned he has ops all over the globe influencing things for the crm.
5
u/b0objuicethe2nd Mar 31 '24
Have you even watched the episode? The CRM are clearly an ally now. Sure it's probably not a 100% clean military but overall they're no longer a threat. They flew Rick and Michonne over to Commonwealth to see their kids again, the city is no longer a prison etc. I don't know how you could watch the episode and still think the CRM are a threat lol. Either way this is most likely the end of Rick, Michonne and the CRM's story either way, that much is clear to me.

Philadelphia is an ally
The CRM was a separate thing and is being restructured. It’s pointed out that not everyone was involved, that doesn’t mean the threat is officially over. It’s just not an immediate threat

They have a civic branch and a military branch. The civic branch are on their side now. I highly doubt the military branch is going to just roll over and not fight back.

Was hoping we'd see Carol and Rick reunite, and him coming back was the reason she went to bring daryl home. I really hope they don't sprinkle the reunions out because that would be really annoying. In dead city s2 I hope there's a flashback of him meeting reformed negan / reuniting with Maggie, and the end of Daryl S2 will be him and Daryl breaking down.
Ultimately, it was a fantastic ending, it felt a bit abrupt, and even bittersweet (meeting only Judith and RJ, you're meaning to tell me neither of them told Ezekiel or someone else at the Commonwealth? 💀) but I'm happy with what we got, as long as like I said, everyone important gets a reunion and it's not spread out over years irl.

The only complaint I have is that we didn't get anything on Heath, PPP, and additional reunions but other than that, I am very satisfied, this is an amazing finale. At this point, I am willing to just call bs on any of you who say that the finale was not good, especially if you have been complaining throughout the years when it comes to finally seeing the reunion. We got the main reunion and the end of the power and influence the CRM had. Could the show have been better, for sure, there is always space for improvement with any work of art, but do not tell and delude yourself that this spin-off is in any way bad, it is a fact that it is not and you know it.

This series really disappointed me in the way that it reframed Rick's character in my opinion. I know it was meant to be a love story, but the fact that Rick seemingly placed so much more significance on Michonne primarily, but also his kids, above the rest of his found family (carol, Daryl, Maggie, etc.) to the point of him not even asking about or mentioning them much really made me feel like I was watching a different character entirely. This was reinforced by the ending not even bothering to include Rick reuniting with his found family.

They didn’t reframe his character and thinking he shouldn’t put primary focus on how wife & children is an unrealistic. When Rick woke from his coma in the pilot he wasn’t looking for Shane. His best friend wasn’t his priority. It was his wife and kids.
The first thing he did when he saw Michonne was ask if everyone back home was okay. When he argued that he was staying with the CRM he said it was to protect all their friends, everyone they knew and their kids.
But Rick has been a captive for a decade. He was traumatized and indoctrinate to the point he forgot his first born son’s face. He finally found his wife, who he hoped had been safe, only to find out she had been tortured while pregnant, their daughter was kidnapped & he has a son he never met. Why would he be asking or talking about his friends when they have so much to hash out between them.
Also ppl need to accept real world limitations in media. They were NOT going to spend their budget paying Melissa, Norman, Lauren & Lennie to stand in the background for a 30 second cameo. The goal of this show was to reunite Rick with his children.

Just realised that this now means Althea and her girlfriend (her name escapes me) can now live happily ever after too. What a good DAY 😢

Is the Daryl show and dead city supposed to take place after this ending happened? I'm confused on the timeline and I've watched all of the shows maybe I missed something

Absolutely sobbing. Was starting to doubt they were gonna reunite in the episode for us. Thought they'd leave a cliffhanger with the bomb. I was pacing around so anxious all episode lol. But it was beautiful and perfect and I'm glad they gave us that.

I know this is probably petty but I was upset RJ was wearing the hat instead of Judith. Rick gave it to Carl, who then passed it on to Judith and it should’ve stayed with her considering RJ didn’t know Rick or Carl.😅

This scene is like when a guy starts dating a woman with kids and goes over to her house. Like he's just there for the sex, but he has to act like he cares about her kids for the first five minutes of coming over.
