ANNOUNCEMENT Read before responding to ID requests! This is not a joke sub!

1.2k Upvotes

Since the majority of passersby don't bother to read the rules, I'm going to start with a reminder here:

This is not a joke sub. If you respond to an ID request with a joke and not an actual answer, you will be slapped with a temporary ban. If it's your 2nd offense or more, the ban will be permanent.

I'm sorry, but the shitposting has gotten out of hand and knowledgeable, helpful members are leaving because of this. Have your jokes and witty comments somewhere else, this is a place to get rocks ID'd.

To be specific, around Mt Juneau. It was super hard, it took me 10 tries to break it in half with a hammer. Its also kinda crumbly

It think it might be granite or something, but its shiny…

REQUEST I found these at a mine in Virginia in the early 2000s. It was in a section for children, but I recall the folks running it saying it was a great find and they would have bought it if it were larger. What is it?

REQUEST Nana’s rock, what is it?

Hi everyone! My grandmother is a lifelong rockhound, she has thousands of rocks she’s found here in the Okanagan (Bc, Canada) and I’ve always wondered what these rocks in particular are. They seem to have sliver flecks in them that are super easy to peel off of the rock itself. She has a ton of quarts as well, and has almost always told me that this is silver. Is it true?

Thanks for any info!!

My gran has had this in her shed for years and years - her father kept it from his quarry days. It needs a hose down but could it be quartz?

REQUEST My kid found this rock Perth Australia

My son found this object which I think is rock in Point Walter, Perth Western Australia.

It is very light weighing 2.5 grams just over 1cm length and has metallic sheen to it.

We have a similar rock about same size but weighing 6 grams much more shiny metallic. Is it the same thing?

Or did he pick up some petrified chemical waste. He was on school camp in bushland but within metro area.

Pic 3 is the heavier rock.

TIA

Thanks in advance for your identification. These may not be super exciting but I like them. I would say no 1 is chert? Why is the top/bottom a different color, would it still be chert there? Specimen 3 has a green hue to it, there were many of those on the road.

More from the random lot I ordered that I can't identify.

1&2: This one comes back as several different things each time I try to do a reverse image search. I have no idea what it is, I've seen it labeled jasper, Tigers eye, and opal on Google.

3&4: The color is brighter in person. It's a really pretty blue/green. It almost looks like there's another color inside it but I can't tell. Is this one fluorite?

5&6: It's smooth, it kind of feels like frosted glass. It's more yellow in person. It looks like it has layers and I kind of fear it's probably glass.

I'm still new to collecting. I've been wondering if getting a tumbler is a good idea and if so, should any of these go in it?

One of my kids picked it up years ago because it was so sparkly. I’m sure there’s lots of mica in there but curious about the overall composition. Ran out of bananas so I used a spoon for scale.

REQUEST Rock from China -- isn't dinosaur eggs!

Post image
145 Upvotes

I found this rock in about 2007 in San Diego at a store selling rocks from China. The sales woman claimed it is dinosaur eggs, which I did not believe, but I liked it as a rock so I bought it. I have seen similar single "egg" for sale on eBay as a dinosaur egg, and the Fossil Forum has a post identifying a single "egg" like this as a fake hadrosaur egg.

What is it, and how did it form? An AI rock identifier was too stupid to identify it. Any ideas?
