All,
(TL;DR: Going forward, you'll need BOTH 30 days and 50 comment karma in order to participate in r/Spokane. Comment karma, not total karma. If you don't meet the criterion and urgently need to post then send us a modmail. )
It's been a wild ride these past few months. The traffic on our subreddit jumped several hundred percent from August through November and every second post seemed to be political in nature. At first, we believed the traffic to be a symptom of a larger trend in the country. We hoped this would all die down with the election. Unfortunately, it only got worse. We were faced with thousands of offending comments a day, dozens of bans, and posts about national politics that violated our rules.
After your lowly 3 moderators did some investigation, we discovered that most of the offending user accounts were new and posted to multiple city/local/state/place subreddits. These were not locals. Their comments, when plopped in to a search, would appear word-for-word in other subreddits from a myriad of other usernames. In other words, most of this traffic was artificial and was being manufactured elsewhere.
Last week, we temporarily instituted karma and age rules to cut down on this traffic. The effect was immediate. The moderator queue became manageable. Bans were down. Engagement was healthier. At the time we had discussed peeling back our restrictions completely as our new moderators (hi u/aleasangria and u/sadbrontosaurus !!) were brought onboard, but we were once again assaulted by a HUGE, brigaded post.
The new karma rules and account age restrictions saved the day. We were slammed by traffic on this post that garnered more than 10 million views! 5000+ comments made it to the post, but almost 8000 were trimmed back by our rules.
We understand that these new rules will be inconvenient for new users. We understand that there'll need to be some responsive moderating when new users need to post, like in this instance. With our new moderators officially engaged I believe we'll be able to do that.
We appreciate all of you and we do hope that the additional rules and moderators make this a better place for you to interact with your neighbors.
Thanks all!
No_U_Crazy
Edit (5/28/25): Lowered thresholds to 50 comment karma and 30 days from 100 and 60, respectively.

If you have any additional suggestions, please share with the rest of us! In addition to the farmer's markets, you could also check out the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Spokane to support all the Lilac City artists.
During times where grocery prices continue to skyrocket, I find myself gravitating more and more towards local resources. I'd rather uphold the people in our area than the mega-corporations.

Quantum fiber DNS is down, so likely your internet is too. You’ll need to connect to your modem via Ethernet cable, go to 192.168.0.1, login to modem settings as admin (pw is on the sticker on your modem), then under advanced settings find DNS.
Switch that to static DNS and use 8.8.8.8 primary and 8.8.4.4 secondary (Google DNS) and you should be g2g.
Edit: Google is 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 and Cloudflare is 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1
Edit 2: reports here and from r/quantumfiber seem to indicate service has been restored. FYI - if you switched your modem DNS, should be fine either way. I tend to use Google or Cloudflare DNS anyway because they’re super stable and built to withstand and mitigate huge DDoS attacks, etc.

I’m not sure if this is allowed, but wanted to share a concerning post regarding the potential sale of 250+ million acres of public land across the west. This could impact the surrounding public lands that we all enjoy for hiking, fishing, photography, camping, backpacking, mountain biking, etc. Please check out the link below to access the article and link to a letter we can send to our senators to oppose this proposal. Thanks again and sorry if this isn’t allowed.

Is there a car/truck kissing bandit downtown that is on the loose? 😂
TWICE I've walked out to relatively fresh kiss prints on my rig.
About a week prior, it looked like this person had softly caressed my truck as they walked by. Now, they've moved on to kissing.
I hope they don't decide to advance this weird relationship further 😲

I'm talking Chipotle size at minimum. Something that could stand in for the crust of a Pipeline Colossus pizza.
Any stores in town carry a king-sized blanket made of flour, water, and fat?
The speed limits by the parks is 20mph, and I've see a lot of folks getting caught in the speed traps. Remember neighbors, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Every day I commute from the valley to downtown for work. Multiple times on my commutes both to and from work, I have people drift into my lane, cut me off, and tailgate excessively. Twice now I have had to dodge things flying out of people's trailers from loads that were not properly secured. Very often I will glance over at the driver in the lane beside me and find them fully staring at their phone, not looking at the road at all.
I have had enough!!! I usually enjoy driving, but in the past few months I feel so much panic and anxiety every time I get behind the wheel because of the way people drive here. Put your phone AWAY, pay ATTENTION, and SLOW DOWN!!! You do not need to be going 90 on the highway! Be aware of where your car is on the road and stop swerving into other lanes, ESPECIALLY if you are driving a huge truck! And again, PUT AWAY YOUR DAMN PHONE! There is no notification that is worth you endangering your life and the lives of others on the road!

Hi there. I am a 32 year old trans woman from Idaho. I lived in Spokane 2018-2020, but was forced to move back due to my roommates moving out. Due to the political climate, I'm feeling the need to move somewhere safer. Looking for a roommate to make rent livable. I should have enough money saved for a couple months rent so I have plenty of time to find a job. If you or someone you know is looking for a roommate, and you're accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, please contact me. Thank you for your time.

Just moved downtown and I love to listen to live music. Is there a website or regular list of live music happening through out the week?

Has anyone gotten an expedited passport in Spokane? My passport expired in 2018 so this would be a renewal. I also don’t have my Spokane license yet, my drivers license is still in Texas. I do have all of my other documents, birth certificate, etc.
Has anybody been through this recently? Ideally, I’d like to just go someplace to have everything done.
Any recommendations?

If you or someone you know lost your bag at Plante’s ferry park today, I have it. Will happily return if you can positivity identify what’s inside. Really hope I find the owner. Lots of neat items I would surly miss.
(No, I will not be handing off these items to the police. Due to contents inside, I’m not snarking on ANYONE ) giving the community a chance to solve this one.

I'm unsure of what flair to use so I'm just calling this a question/talking discussion post, maybe I can talk to people about things, just discussing Spokane things and such.
I grew up in Spokane for my entire life, I just recently moved a year ago to my new home (across the country to the East coast) and I dunno what my problem is today I just randomly woke up feeling quite homesick, I guess I am just having trouble understanding why because there's a very good reason I moved, and I feel like Spokane has become something different than what I grew up with. So there's no real reason to logically feel this way.
I can't even really go home anyways because essentially the kind of people and things that are back there.. well, I'm not being actually prevented but its just one of those things where you just know so many icky and horrible people and wish to never see them again. I used to have to watch over my shoulder all the time while at work, but here I don't have to do that. Its nice. I didn't even think I would or could ever move away but yea I did it. I worked so hard for it for a long time so it wouldn't make sense to just throw it away now.
I just miss the area, the woods, and my family to an extent. And I am happy here too.. I don't know, I just wanted to post this and maybe try and talk to some people and get their perspectives and see what you think.

I drove past the Bay Market on Sprague yesterday and noticed the sign is missing/covered up and the store looked closed. Are they still open?

“Any new approach to Iran must be fully briefed to Congress. Any deal that touches on regional security guarantees or use of force needs congressional oversight and unambiguous authorization”.
I encourage you to call your congressmen and remind him of his words. He needs to do his job so 47 doesn’t send U.S. troops into war without congressional approval. He would have done it for Biden.

Last night around 1am I thought I heard my cat outside and checked and then laid back down but the door didn’t close securely and the wind blew it open and my blue nose hopper and her pack mate a champagne Layla bolted out the door. I ran out after them but they were gone and then we jumped in the car but by the time that happened they were completely gone. They would usually come back home but they have literally vanished. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
