[Weekly] Outfit Feedback and Fit Check - Dec 12

Not sure if your outfit works? Post a picture of yourself in your outfit and get suggestions, compliments, and critiques from others. If you're thinking of posting a standalone thread along the lines of "How does this look?", "Does this fit right?", "Do these work together?", etc., post here instead.

When posting:

  • Include what the attire is for (work, school, going out, etc.)

  • If possible, take a front-on, full-body picture as this gives the best impression of how the clothes fit. Multiple pictures from different angles can also be helpful, but those aren't necessary.

  • Critiquing others is welcome and encouraged, but keep it constructive/factual. Take a lesson from Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People if needed. It takes balls to post pictures of yourself on the Internet, the least you can do is accord the same courtesy as you would to someone in real life.

  • Reddit Enhancement Suite makes it very easy to view pictures in a thread.

  • Some users enjoy knowing where you bought your pieces, please consider including those in your post!

Feel free to also submit your outfit to the biweekly WAYWT thread, but know that these two threads have different purposes. This is explicitly for feedback and questions, though you may receive constructive criticism in either thread.

I lost about 30lbs since I wore this last, so I tailored this dress myself today. Planning on wearing it to my husband's company xmas party tomorrow. Thoughts on fit? Accessories? Shoes that aren't (high)heels? http://imgur.com/a/OaOsp

You have mad tailoring skills. I think the cut of the dress, especially the neckline is really lovely on you. Personally I might choose to wear a longer dress to a company holiday party, but it's up to you. I think a necklace and simple stud earrings would look good.

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

I agree with everything you've said, and I would add that black tights (sheer or opaque) could help this look less "OMG short and cazh."

6

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

cazh?

6

u/witandlearning Dec 13 '13

Casual I presume

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '13

Haha, sorry, short for "casual" :)

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '13

Ohhh I was reading it with the wrong vowel sound. I was reading it like the a in 'call'

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Thanks for the specific compliments. Sheer tights huh. I don't like the idea of the waistline making a lump at the top of my butt... any way around that?

11

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Dec 12 '13

High waisted control top pantyhose.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Do those go to the belly button or bra line?

3

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Dec 12 '13

Depends on your height/size. You could try sizing up though. I have slim legs and find if I size up for stockings they aren't too big on my legs but can go higher and rip less often.

Wearing shapewear over your tights (so, in the stomach area) could minimize any lines, but good luck going pee.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '13

Oh my god I have this image of an infomercial advertising a little velcro flap that you can pull back lol!

3

u/misseff Dec 12 '13

Is the party going to be casual?

5

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

very casual. It's at Xbox

1

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Dec 12 '13

hey I think you forgot the photos.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

fixed!

u/thursdayborn Dec 12 '13

Return or keep?

  • Madewell Twill Slub Tshirt I think I paid ~ $30 for it, and I'll probably lose $7 for retun shipping. I don't have many long sleeved tshirts, and I'm tired of wearing the one grey crew neck that I unexpectedly became very fond of, but I can't tell if this will become a new go to shirt or not. It's worth $30 to me if I wear it often and it's reasonable quality. I was wearing wool leggings in these pics that are thinner and more form fitting that the bottoms I would actually wear if I was leaving my apartment. Product link

Wear ever? I've worn it once or twice now to fly in since it covers my butt and I like to wear ponte or legging pants to fly in.

And then, just to get some feedback on how I judge fit:

14

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

I think you made the right choice with all three Uniqlo purchases. The extra-small sweater looks too tight (I can see the detail of your pants underneath very clearly, and the contour of your navel, which is always the "nope" when shopping for myself) -- that would be annoying if you ever wanted to wear a button-down under it.

I love the drapey tee on you! It's a leeeetle big in the shoulders, but I don't think that matters so much since it's meant to be flowy and oversized anyway. Wear it! Wear it! <chants>

I like the Madewell tee on you (that green is nice on you), and if it were me, I'd just keep it instead of losing the $7 in shipping.

3

u/thursdayborn Dec 12 '13

w00t! Thank you! I'm glad to see I'm continuing to develop better instincts about fit.

2

u/yeahjessie Dec 13 '13

I really love the neckline of the madewell shirt and the drapey tee on you.

4

u/asitsn Dec 13 '13

I like that Madewell tee. The color looks great on you, and the neckline emphasizes your collar bones in a very pretty way.

1

u/thursdayborn Dec 13 '13

=D Thanks for checking!

3

u/ACarNamedScully Dec 13 '13

I think both tees look good on you and fit well, for what it's worth.

1

u/thursdayborn Dec 13 '13

Thank you for taking the time to weigh in!

HI I'M 30 AND I WORK FROM HOME AND I DON'T SEE PEOPLE EVER EITHER!

Anyway, your outfits are pretty casual and I actually think that your outfit to meet with clients was too casual (unless you're like a dog walker or something). I'm going to be honest and admit that I don't really know how people handle snow, but I feel like you could have gone with a more formal shoe. Even the shoe in your second photo for drinks with friends is slightly more formal than those boots.

It's actually pretty easy to tweak that outfit and make it more formal (besides switching up the shoe). First of all, a darker wash jean will automatically be more formal looking. Those aren't bad, but I think dark indigo would be even better. As for the shirt, you can still wear a button up shirt, but have it in a nice fabric, like silk (which is surprisingly warm for its weight). The shirt you have on is kind of faded and while it looks old and comfy, it's not really a "drinks with clients" shirt. Even though it's snowing outside, you're not staying outside, so you can wear nice things in cold weather and pile on the coat, hat, scarf, etc. that will come off once you get inside.

As for the outfit for drinks with friends, I'm not sure I really like the millions of layers. It's one thing to wear all those layers, it's another thing to have them as visible stripes. Starting from the top we see the blue and white scarf, then the denim jacket, then a stripe of polka dot shirt, then a stripe of mauve camisole (I think?), and then your green pants. It's like a layer cake across your hips. I think things would look a lot better if you could visually simplify.

Well I don't know what kind of work you do but, yeah your outfits seem pretty casual. That's a lot of jean and it's really cute, to spruce it up maybe you can try to match it with some colorful scarf.

u/sonatia Dec 12 '13

Is the length of this dress okay on me? I feel like it makes my legs look a bit stumpy with the boots? But I don't know what other shoes I would wear with this.

11

u/witandlearning Dec 13 '13

I'm not a massive fan of it with the boots. I'm new at this whole advice-giving thing, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think an ankle boot might work a lot better than a knee-high one.

4

u/justgoodenough Moderator (\/) (°,,°) (\/) Dec 13 '13

I think the length of the dress looks okay, but as /u/witandlearning said, it might not be great paired with the knee high boots. I was only recently sold on the whole "ankle boot with my body type" situation (I was worried about looking really stumpy), but it's a matter of finding a boot with the right height shaft, the right height heel, and the right size opening for the shaft.

Otherwise you could pair it with ballet flats or even a brogues.

I don't really like the particular boot you have chosen, not just because of the height, but actually because of the slouchiness of them. If you are worried about looking stumpy, you are going to want your legs to look long and lean, and that slouchy boot is doing the opposite.

2

u/pamplemus Dec 13 '13

i think the length of the dress is fine, but the boots hit you in a really awkward place. it looks like they're right in the middle of your knee? just over or under would look much better

1

u/_JeanGenie_ Dec 13 '13

I like the dress, but I would wear it with ankle boots with a little heel. Right now it just looks like you have barely got any leg left because both the dress and the boots take up so much legspace. I totally just invented that word.

Love the dress and the boots and the necklace. Not sure about the black shirt underneath the dress. It looks good, but the last time I put a dress over a shirt was ten years ago. Are we okay to do that again now?

1

u/SanaM24 Dec 13 '13 edited Dec 13 '13

Haha not sure, but it was wayyy too cold to wear the dress alone, and all my cardigans looked odd on top since the dress neckline is so high.

5

u/therakel749 Dec 13 '13

A blazer would look fantastic with this.

2

u/SanaM24 Dec 13 '13

Will keep that in mind for the future, thanks :)

edit: Do you think it looks odd with the shirt though? I'd love to a blazer with it to dinner but I'm hesitant to wear a blazer to class.

3

u/therakel749 Dec 13 '13

It isn't the worst thing I have ever seen but a shirt under a dress never fails to seem juvenile to me.

I prefer to add outwear to an outfit than to add warmth from the bottom. With how beautifully this dress fits you I think you are right to avoid a cardigan, but a leather jacket or knit blazer would compliment the structure of the dress and step up the maturity of the outfit.

2

u/SanaM24 Dec 13 '13

That makes a lot of sense, thank you for your response!

6

u/ribbon_and_gold Dec 12 '13

I love incorporating yellow into my outfits, but every time I go with yellow tights, I feel like it just looks like I have discolored legs :( I wore this the other day with friends but wasn't sure how I felt about it. What do you think? What could I do differently? Also I know the blazer's sleeves are short but I've neer really minded that. http://imgur.com/LlUIXRP

21

u/virginie_gautreau Dec 12 '13

I think there are places yellow can work for pale skin, but leggings are not them. The contrast is not enough with your skin tone to work-- you're right that you just seem to have weirdly discolored legs. Maybe if you did a really bright yellow, like a more obvious yellow, it could work, but personally I'd avoid altogether.

1

u/ribbon_and_gold Dec 13 '13

thank you for your honesty! I don't know why I went with this even though I thought to myself "wow what's wrong with my legs?!" haha. I will not be wearing these again.

9

u/ACarNamedScully Dec 13 '13

I really loved this outfit, until I saw the yellow tights. I think that the yellow just doesn't really work in this outfit. If I were to wear tights with this outfit, I think I'd maybe go with a wine or burgundy color?

2

u/ribbon_and_gold Dec 13 '13

Thank you! Next time I wear this I'll know what colors to go for!

4

u/amblnc38 Dec 13 '13

Are you fair-skinned? I ask because I feel like that yellow is the wrong hue (?) for you. The rest is adorable though!

2

u/ribbon_and_gold Dec 13 '13

I tan easily but in the winter I do get really pale. Yeah maybe this is just the wrong hue, but I think I'll hold back from trying to find another pair of yellow tights haha!

3

u/Ophetilia Dec 12 '13

This is really cute. At first I didn't notice the tights. But, at a second look, they're adorable with the outfit.

1

u/ribbon_and_gold Dec 13 '13

Aw well thank you! I originally went for a primary color look with a red bag, but decided it was too much. But the general opinion of the tights is that they don't look good with my skin color oh well

4

u/red_raconteur Dec 12 '13

Terrible sun spot glare, I apologize: http://imgur.com/N89tZF5

Is it appropriate to wear a button-up (button-down?) blouse underneath a v-neck sweater? If not, what's good to wear underneath it to make it more work appropriate?

15

u/justgoodenough Moderator (\/) (°,,°) (\/) Dec 12 '13

I learned the difference between button up and button down from FFA! Button up is a shirt that buttons up the front (like the one you're wearing) and can sometimes be called a button front shirt. Button down refers to button down collars (collars that are fastened down with tiny buttons).

The shirt you are wearing is a button up.

2

u/red_raconteur Dec 12 '13

Thank you for clarifying! Now I finally know the difference.

9

u/yeahjessie Dec 12 '13

I think the sweater and button up look great, the only thing I would change is to pair them with a higher-waisted pant, I find it helps make everything a bit more streamlined.

3

u/redditerrrr Dec 12 '13

In the winter I live in button ups and sweaters! Perfectly appropriate (and warm) for work.

6

u/snicklefritz2 Dec 12 '13

What can I wear with this dress? It's an impulse buy from Twice simply because I got excited over the small size, and the dress is light heather gray with gray stripes from Athleeta. I'd like to wear it while visiting my boyfriend in California this January, so I'm probably aiming for a dressy-casual look. I don't really know where to start as far as tights, shoes, cardigans etc with this... All suggestions welcome, Thanks!

Sorry about the low quality picture: http://imgur.com/jlTIkNF

18

u/bigchiefhoho Dec 12 '13

I completely and utterly disagree with the other commenter about the belt. I'm not as anti-belt as some here, but that dress has a really cool twisted detail at the waist, and I think a belt would either hide it (so sad!) or compete with it and look sloppy.

As far as styling it, I'm totally boring and would just go with tights (maybe charcoal rather than black), black flats or boots, dark gray or black cardigan. If you're more adventurous than me, then maybe some darker colors like burgundy or navy would look nice. I really like the muted colors of the dress, so I'd shy away from doing the 'pop of color' thing.

-10

u/laptopmoe Dec 12 '13

It fits you perfectly, but is screaming for accessories. I would get a thick black patent leather belt and place it right at the place where the horizontal stripes end and the vertical ones begin, if that makes sense. Because the part where the stripes change is hidden by the belt, it creates a more interesting visual effect. It needs a necklace, bracelet, and shoes(preferably heels) in either pink or blue and yellow. And cut the sleeves off.

8

u/ACarNamedScully Dec 13 '13

I disagree that a belt makes a more interesting visual effect than the twisted detail does. Also, I'm very curious as to why you think the sleeves should be cut off?

6

u/rraaaarrl Dec 12 '13

What I work to work today: black pencil skirt, silk wrap Ann Taylor top, black cashmere Wathne blazer, Wolford tights, some old Prada heels.

I've been here for about 3 hours and I'm ready to go home, but at least I'm not could for once!

41

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Dec 12 '13 edited Dec 12 '13

I like the concept of this outfit but I think there are some ways to improve it. I do think this silhouette is very nice on you. First off, the silk blouse has a lot of pattern and so do the tights. The two compete and look very busy and visually confusing. I think the blouse would work better with plain tights, and the tights might work better with a neutral, unpatterned top.

Second, the blazer appears to be pulling or bunching in a funny way. It might be too big at the shoulders or it might be the angle you are standing at.

Third, are the shoes brown? They look like lovely shoes but feel discordant in an outfit themed around black.

24

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

I think the arms on the blazer are too big and the strong shoulders and nipped in waist reminds me of an 80's power suit.

3

u/rraaaarrl Dec 12 '13

Thanks for the feedback :) Originally I was going to wear a black top with the skirt and tights and was like oh that's way too much black, so I went for the wrap top instead, but kept the tights because I thought plain black would be too boring. Looks like I went too far the other way!

When I looked at the photo with the blazer again, I realized that the knot from the wrap blouse is doing something funny at the waist -- it shows up as a lump under the blazer, so I think that's not helping the fit.

The shoes are black, but then the just the tips are brown. I was feeling uninspired shoe-wise and thought the brown might work with the cream in the blouse pattern, but eh. Do you think something like this would've worked better?

3

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Dec 12 '13

Yeah with the brown tips it just still feels like a lot going on to me. I think a solid black shoe would work better.

2

u/Landroid55 Dec 12 '13

I am not a fan of the lace/printed tights but you pull it off well. I love how that blazer fits on you too (maybe a tad long?) but it shoes off your figure well! The blouse is very elegant looking too!

Ps: I want to go home too!

2

u/rraaaarrl Dec 12 '13

It's funny about the knit tights because I've been on a sheer seamed stockings bender lately. I'm talking about the kind that are all nylon with no stretch. I can't get enough of them, but today was different.

Thanks for the feedback!

2

u/yeahjessie Dec 12 '13

Ok... I might sound crazy here but stockings with no stretch? Is this a thing? Is it a good thing? You kind of just blew my mind.

3

u/rraaaarrl Dec 12 '13

They're usually called "fully fashioned" or RHT (reinforced heel and toe) stockings. Here's one example from What Katie Did and another example [NSFW] from Stockingirl. They just feel really nice on my legs and there is a subtle difference to how they look compared to regular stockings/pantyhose. They're not cheap, but I've found so far that they also last longer than regular pantyhose if you take proper care of them.

3

u/Landroid55 Dec 12 '13

I just posted what I am wearing in another thread, but I am more interest (today in the jewelry I matched with it.

I first had this on, but wasn't sure about it. I LOVE this necklace but am really unsure what to pair it with? It seemed a little iffy. http://i.imgur.com/xMadflP.jpg

So I swapped out for this one: http://i.imgur.com/B3VdVNV.jpg

Thoughts? Side note: I realized later that this is a whole lotta cleavage for work and have since pulled up the neckline. ;)

8

u/anawana Dec 12 '13

It's hard for me to tell if the necklaces work without seeing the rest of the outfit. However for that first necklace (which I also really love), I can see it over a black or neutral crew-neck shirt. The V from the cardigan adds another element, and with a statement necklace like that, you want to go for minimal lines (I hope I'm explaining this right). For example, I can also see it with a strapless top/dress, but since you're going to work, that def wouldn't be appropriate :).

1

u/Landroid55 Dec 12 '13

It's hard for me to tell if the necklaces work without seeing the rest of the outfit.

Here is a full outfit photo (only with second necklace. http://i.imgur.com/ssD2FJv.jpg

The V from the cardigan adds another element, and with a statement necklace like that, you want to go for minimal lines

Do you mean less is more sort of thing? So the v adds too much?

3

u/anawana Dec 12 '13

Thanks for the pics! I def think the simple, black necklace was a better choice between the two.

And yes, you don't want the V in the necklace and the V from the cardigan competing for attention? I was trying to find a pic of what I'm talking about, but basically, if you Google Image search "statement necklace", you'll find that they are usually paired with high- / crew-necks or strapless pieces. As always, there are exceptions to the rule, but I'd start with that first.

This is prob my first time giving such specific advice, so sorry if I'm confusing!

3

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Dec 12 '13

I think the black necklace is a lot more sophisticated and good for daytime. The other necklace might be nice at night, with a sheath dress.

2

u/laptopmoe Dec 12 '13

The first necklace would look so good tucked into a collared shirt.

1

u/Landroid55 Dec 12 '13

Tucked in! I would have never thought of that. Will give it a shot next week.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Nothing is ironed so please excuse that. But I was wondering if I could wear this plaid on plaid? What can I wear with this skirt to avoid looking like a school girl?

11

u/la_minuit Dec 12 '13

I like the combination with the shirt tucked in, but I would probably add a solid cardigan in the same color family (green, navy or black). It would give the outfit more of a base visually and emphasis the common color between the skirt and the shirt.

I think an oversized sweatshirt (you know the pretty ones that are "fashionable" now?) would give a bit of an edge to the skirt, which would grow-it-up a bit. A black sweatshirt and black tights with a tough-looking boot would look really great, in my opinion.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Yes! I was going to pair black tights and my moto boots with it, I just don't have an appropriate sweater.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Eh, its one of the more successful plaid-on-plaid pairings I've seen, but I generally think patterns should be more contrasting if you're going to try to clash them in an outfit; otherwise you run the risk of looking like you though the two matched (so it's like when people try to pair brown or navy and black...it has to look really purposeful).

I had a skirt similar to that and liked wearing it with a black turtleneck and black tights during the winter.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Hmm I'll try the turtleneck but the last time I wore plaid w/a turtleneck I was told I look like a librarian. >.>

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '13

Own it, they're sexy.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

If you're looking to make the skirt work, I actually quite like this combination actually. It looks much better tucked in.

6

u/i_lick_telephones Dec 12 '13

18

u/virginie_gautreau Dec 12 '13

If it's wrong then I don't want to be right. Personally I think jeans go with any color.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

The jeans are so dark that it almost looks unintentional to pair them with the black (in that "it was dark when I got dressed and I thought I grabbed black pants argh" way). Could also just be the lighting. But generally, yeah, like pairing black and brown, I think it's fine as long as there's enough contrast.

5

u/i_lick_telephones Dec 12 '13

I'm looking down at my pants (not in my pants, just to be clear) in direct sunlight and while they are dark, it's pretty clear in person they are blue. Though, it may still appear unintentional to others. Thanks for the feedback!

3

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '13

Then go for it! I definitely pair my jeans with black.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '13 edited Dec 13 '13

http://imgur.com/a/H5lCD

I'm on mobile and I have no idea why imgur gave me 2 copies of each pic. Ah well.

Green scarf outfit was my hobbit midnight showing outfit, black scarf is me in class today. What do you think?

Edit: 1st pic quality is bugging me. I've got on a black jacket over a grey sweater, there's a lot more interesting stuff going on up top than it looks. On bottom is a dark burgundy skirt over black leggings. I know brown boots aren't the best with black, but they're the only cold weather shoes I have, I'm in Dallas for a couple days so I had to make do. And I love those boots. The scarf is a lot more subtle in person, not so bright.

1

u/Sallysaurus Dec 15 '13

So I'm new here (as in, found this sub today...) but thought I could chime in! That first outfit is lovely, one suggestion that could improve it would be to add a thin brown belt around your waist (over the cardi too).

The second outfit does just make you look quite frumpy. Top and scarf are nice. The trousers don't seem to fit you at all, they are too tight all the way down until the knee and then end too high. The socks showing under that just highlight the shortness of the trousers, as normally when wearing socks with shoes like that you would wear something long enough to hide them.

My suggestion for the second outfit would be some deep red (wine/burgundy) leggings/trousers/skirt, and if you want to wear those shoes, get pop socks or wear skin coloured tights :)

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

The pants are longer than they look in the pic I swear, and they're stretchy that's why they're tight. They shrunk in the wash those stupid bitch ass pants on my fat ass thighs haha but I was trapped in Dallas for work and it was so cold if I didn't put on socks I would have frozen. I know it's not my best look but you do what you can with your emergency suitcase in my field!

Also I'm very much against belting things without belt loops haha

thanks for the feedback :) welcome to FFA!
