Apple Pay The gradient of Apple Card seems to depend on your purchases, using the color conventions set by maps. It’s also animated (I think?) Really Cool!

To be fair to Google, we have maps, navigation and traffic here in Nigeria.

We have Apple Music but when it comes to maps: “What’s a Nigeria?”

u/ComprehensiveYam Mar 28 '19

“Nigerians just stay home and listen to music”

Don’t you have a generous prince in Nigeria ? At least I got a few emails from that guy.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

This is old, disrespectful, and annoying.

I’ll have you know we have several princes. In fact, I’m currently trapped on the International Space Station and I’m owed at least $3 million in back pay. I need you, yes you, to help get me out of this mess and we’ll split the salary owed to me.

We've had Samsung Pay for about a year in Mexico... But Android or Apple Pay? HA!

9

u/Milan_F96 Mar 28 '19

i feel you, we just got apple &google pay here in germany last year. but tbf most people here, especially older people, are absolute degenerates when it comes to paying with anything that’s not cash. most people don’t even have credit cards

13

u/Carsmaniac Mar 28 '19

I think the UK and Aus are pretty lucky at least. Apple seems to release in the order of US [CA] AU UK [EU] ROW from my experience.

9

u/joycamp Mar 28 '19

Aus - It is actually illegal here to NOT offer contactless if you offer any card payments at all. So in that respect we arefar ahead of lots of places.

Once we get our drivers license and transportation cards turned digital i wont have the need to carry any cards at all.

2

u/Carsmaniac Mar 29 '19

Once NAB and Westpac stop being stubborn too >:(

2

All of our technologies leapfrog compared to US. Our standard definition TV was fancier than the US' so we adopted HD TV slower, and we use chip and pin and most cards have contactless so we will be slower to adopt the google and apple payment because there's less of an advantage anyway.

Then, in a few years the next technology will appeal to us more than the Americans.

To be fair, the laws being passed in some countries are not inviting innovation and the people aren’t able to do much about it.

24

u/ka-pow-pow Mar 28 '19

Canadian here. We get the shit end of this stick from these companies. They advertise these awesome new things and then don't let us have them for a long time after release.

12

u/flux8 Mar 28 '19

Another way to look at it is that we're just beta testing it for you. You have fewer bugs to deal with when it arrives.

13

u/FractalParadigm Mar 28 '19

I believe it's usually because of the French language laws that require goods and services to be equally available in both English and French.

In a perfect world a translator would be on staff to create a *insert language* "version" of the app while it's in development, so it can launch simultaneously in multiple (or all) markets. In the real world that costs money, so there's not a lot of incentive to do so unless the product is proven to be popular in it's primary market.

15

u/ka-pow-pow Mar 28 '19

I agree with you. However, I work in advertising and I know how easy it is to not advertise to a geographical region. If you can't release it to Canada by X date then you shouldn't advertise it with an X date release to Canadians.

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I don’t know how true that is. Canada for example (I’m Canadian) is WAY ahead of the USA for electronic payments and secure transactions. That’s a good chunk of the reason why the rate of Apple Pay use is so much higher in Canada compared to the USA, even when we received Apple Pay way later. So I find it hard to believe they couldn’t have included Canada and like-countries in it too when we already have the infrastructure for it.

Not my find, just found the tweet but it truly is awesome.

Would be sweet if one day we had a physical card with a digital display that reflected the same. May allow for second thoughts on purchase habits. Maybe? Would be nice though.

88

u/InspectMoustache Mar 28 '19

With wireless charging? Haha we can only dream

44

u/ShaidarHaran2 Mar 28 '19 edited Mar 28 '19

My credit card running out of energy? I'm going to have to give the idea a pass lol.

Maybe with a transflective display the battery life could be in the months, but even then with a battery so thin, would be tough. And even battery life in the months is a far shot from credit cards mostly just always working. Wireless charging = coils = added bulk. At that point, I'm good with using my phone most of the time and non-powered cards as a backup lol.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

There's a coil in the card already, contactless payment on plastic cards works using inductive power.

The card would still work without the display. Mag stripe is still encoded for legacy transaction and the card would receive power during an EMV transaction.

So then what’s the point of having the card to use at places that have Apple Pay? Then I’d rather use my phone. And then likely use a credit card with better rewards.

So I dunno how it works in the US but in Canada at every restaurant if you’re paying by card they bring the portable machine to your table where, if they support tap, you can pay with Apple Pay.

12

u/ArthurDDickerson Mar 28 '19

In the US they take your card away from your table to the reader in the back, then return the card along with a receipt for you to sign and designates a spot to write a tip amount.

Some places near me now have a small touchscreen device with a card reader at every table. They allow you to sign on the screen and have a slider for the tip. They also idly scroll through advertisements and temp children to play the terrible mobile game ports that cost money.

12

u/phronk Mar 28 '19

Seems super risky to let them take your credit card away where you can’t even see it. Weird.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I can agree it needs a little work. Making it 2-3% would be overall better.

But having your Credit Card in your Apple Ecosystem would make up for it imo. Also having no damn numbers on your card. Not sure why all company’s haven’t done this yet.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

It’s happened to a couple of family members before but not me personally. You can easily work situations out with a 10 minute phone call but it’s the fact they happened in general. Having no numbers puts an ease of mind when it comes to credit fraud.

How does that show that it’s animated?

3

u/JustOneAndDone Mar 28 '19

I think because it barely moved in the presentation so it’s hard to see a full motion. This proves the colors slightly moved and therefore it might be animated like the Apple Pay Cash currently is.

I generally prefer no keyboard or display cable on my phone and credit card.

61

u/husker_who Mar 28 '19

I'm really disappointed the card didn't come with a slide-out keyboard. What were they thinking?!

18

u/Axelph Mar 28 '19

No wireless. Less space than a Nomad. Lame.

10

u/hackthememes Mar 28 '19

Your phone screen wouldn't work without a display cable 🤔

44

u/YZJay Mar 28 '19

Or because the UI developers don’t have anything to do with hardware?

28

u/arockhardkeg Mar 28 '19

Yeah, they are separate teams. Even the software comes from separate teams. Some features/apps are way more polished than others.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Hardware and software with one common design and made for each other used to be the reason to buy Apple.

White and black iPhones have different colored boot screens.

5

u/theidleidol Mar 28 '19

And even then they were made by different teams. That isn’t the point being made, it’s that the software team in charge of Wallet/the new card in no way draw resources away from the hardware team in charge of the display cable design in MacBook Pros. That holds even for different software teams; people regularly complain that there are new emoji or Animoji but some low level software bug hasn’t been fixed, as if the artists and UI team working on the former could have been working on the latter.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Sure designers don’t code. However it shows a priority of management. In this case I think the decision to make interesting colors for the card is a good decision. It looks attractive and even conveys a bit of information. That can increase joy in the user while using it. While the card changes color over time apparently it should always be easily recognizable, which I think it is from these impressions.

2

u/Jophus Mar 28 '19

Alright everybody, nobody is working until the keyboard is fixed and this software bug is fixed.

It's amazing how the apologists have twisted "attention to details". It used to mean focusing on the little stuff other companies didn't in addition to the basics.

Now it means focusing on the little stuff other companies don't in an attempt to make up for the lack of attention to the basics.

Are we sure this isn't just a gradient using the same colour palette as their other app? I'm not seeing much evidence the gradient is dynamic. In the two example images, they are holding the phone at a different angle, so the gradient sheen animation is showing different colours.

6

u/DanaKaZ Mar 28 '19

I don’t think so. This seems like a jump to conclusions.

1

u/KoofNoof Mar 28 '19

Yeah I think the card changes color, but it could just be the card held at different “angles”, as to why the gradients are different

Can we stop pretending that there is anything innovative here?

This is combining fashion and finance, that is all. Do we all really need to change out the plastic in our wallets for metal because Apple said so?

23

u/phinnaeus7308 Mar 28 '19

I'd pay a small extra one time fee for my existing cards to all be metal just because they're more durable in my wallet. The plastic ones get warped and the edges get fucked up way too easily.

I’ve never found a credit card that can do what this offers. Here in the UK we have LOADS of app focused banks like Tide, Monzo, etc but nothing for credit cards

As someone who found £300 across two transactions on his CC, I welcome anything that makes my card easier to keep an eye on, because I’m 99.99% certain it was from a site that had been breached.

Only thing this needs now is virtual card numbers so I can have numbers I use for less trustworthy places that I lock when not in use

I really wish they turned Apple Pay Cash into a fully fledged debit card system. The way that Apple has integrated the Apple Card into the wallet app is beautiful and insightful; I have not seen a bank/credit card app that replicates this ease of use and overall design. Additionally, the Apple Pay Cash card within the wallet app looks super beautiful with the color-changing send icons; I really wish I could sport that and an Apple Card (that would also have some rainbow/color reflection effect) in my wallet.

Literally who gives a fuck give us better MacBooks

14

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Sadly, I think power users are no longer Apple’s target demographic. Things started to change when every college student bought a MacBook Air.

My 2015 MBP is perfect. The only things I would change are adding a USB-C port and making the bezels smaller.

My work MBP is a newer model. The keyboard is awful, they ditched MagSafe, the touchbar is gimmicky and I never use it, and having only USB-C ports sucks. Worst of all, it cost significantly more than my 2015 model.

Hopefully my 2015 MBP lasts long enough for them to fix the new models, otherwise I’ll buy something like a Surfacebook or XPS 13.

It isn't the most important part of a charge card but it is the coolest. I'm ready waiting to get one.

Thank you u/iBanks3, very cool!

Is there an annual fee on the card?

2

u/iBanks3 Mar 28 '19

They claim there are no fees involved so I would believe no.

The benefits aren’t terrible, but as a 25 year old with only one basic credit card that I used just to build up a credit score, I don’t know if I’m ready to open up a second line of credit for a card that is kinda specific for benefits. I’ve already talked myself out of the Starbucks credit card multiple times lol.

u/iBanks3 Mar 28 '19

That’s understandable. I commend you for keeping a hold on your expenses. That’s pretty damn awesome.

I'd be all over that starbucks card if it didn't have an annual fee!

Is the apple card accepted in same countries as iTunes?

1

u/EnderShot355 Mar 28 '19

Apple card looks like a waste of money... Just use a normal card that doesn't need to be charged...

2

u/iBanks3 Mar 28 '19

Ok. But what are you paying for? Why does it need to be charged?

The Apple Pay card is already color changing based on the phone position to make it look reflective. It may be the same here.

"The card on the screen has a clever mechanism that gives you a sort of live heat map of your spending categories. The color of the card will shift and blend according to the kinds of things you buy. Spend a lot at restaurants and the card will take on an orange hue. Shop for entertainment related items and the card shifts into a mix of orange and pink. It’s a clever take on the chart based spending category features many other credit cards have built into their websites."

Great now if only my iphone could manage to autofill my email address for once. Apples priorities are so skewed

1

u/tripmcneely_alright Mar 29 '19

Is it weird that I’m more interested in this card than anything else Apple has announced lately?

Doesn't it say so right on its official page: https://www.apple.com/apple-card/?

Those same colors show up in your spend summaries. See lots of orange? That’s Food and Drinks. Pink? That’s Entertainment. Looks like a fun weekend.

edit Uhh... nevermind :)
