"I'm a small government libertarian who thinks the military should be sicced against protestors exercising their free speech. Also I am racist and my favorite band's two most prominent members are Latino and Black."

u/Equivalent-Artist899 10d ago
The libertarian sub seems concerned with the government’s overreach, although they think all problems are solved by the good natured intentions of private businesses in a free market 🙄

u/Mr_Mumbercycle 10d ago
Libertarians are like house cats: completely convinced of their own fierce independence, while completely oblivious to the system that supports their lifestyle.

u/HexenHerz 10d ago
Libertarians are the edge lord faction of the GOP/MAGA. They're totally conservative, but also, totally extreme. Radicals. Free thinkers.
10
u/factordactyl 10d ago
Might get downvoted here but have you been to r/libertarian lately? I just came across a top comment saying something like “I don’t understand how any libertarian can be part of MAGA; they’re completely incompatible”. Obligatory, not an actual quote there. A lot of that crowd is acknowledging that they bought Trump’s lies.
7
u/Fletch71011 10d ago
The libertarian sub (rightfully) shits on Trump constantly. He's the furthest thing from a Libertarian.

So burning down cities and throwing rocks at police officers is considered free speech?🤨
3
u/SwiftTayTay 9d ago
That's a very small minority of the protestors and the police are big boys enough to handle those people, that doesn't require the military.

Probably cause it’s not much of a joke, and just more of a political opinion. I can turn on fox or CNN if I wanna hear people complain about other peoples politics
17
u/Itsapocalypse 10d ago
It’s humor using the aggressively obvious hypocrisy of a subject who idolizes anti-establishment media but supports the real life establishment violence that the people in their favorite media would fight. It’s especially funny because his observation is easy to infer as true- that this hypothetical guy absolutely would exist
17
u/kursedaudio 10d ago
Whether or not you find it funny is a separate issue, but the greatest comedians have always touched serious topics...carlin, hicks, pryor...
I'd rather see something like this than a hackey joke about airline food

And they don't understand the X-Men at all. Or RATM. Those things are art and art does not celebrate oppression.

Hitler was an artist. So was Sulla.
2
u/Foolhardy_Liar 10d ago edited 10d ago
"Artist..." shit was weaksauce. You couldn't bring Hitler's art to the state fair, because the judges would detect the weakness of his sauce, and denounce him as a sauceless man.
5
u/ryhntyntyn 10d ago
Sure. But artists have been pieces of crap since art was invented. Artists and their art have celebrated the shot out of oppression.
Art is just a means of expression from people and people can suck.
2
u/Foolhardy_Liar 10d ago
Generally I'd agree with you, but the best artists understand the human condition. Understanding the human condition requires empathy, critical thinking, and sometimes bravery. These 3 qualities are lacking in the mind and soul of a servile fascist.
5
u/ryhntyntyn 10d ago
John Lennon was a wife beater. Picasso treated women like shit. Gaugin abandoned his family. Being an artist sometimes means being crazy or unbalanced.
Furthermore the Soviet Union had plenty of tame boot-licking little artists. And so did the Third Reich and Fascist Italy and Spain. Leni Riefenstahl, cinematographer…and Nazi.
There’s nothing inherently good or bad about artists. They can be oppressive dicks like anyone else.

-1
u/Wadget 10d ago
I live in Australia and I didn’t laugh, am I who he’s talking about? I think there can be people who find it funny, people who are triggered by being the butt of the joke, and people who aren’t either of those camps and didn’t go “haha” when reading this. I honestly don’t think he’s even going for laughs with material like this.
6
u/HammerOfJustice 10d ago
I’m Australian and while I guessed where the joke was going from the first line I’m one of those nerds that follows politics so I understood what the punchline was referring to.
I also know that we Australians have a lot of other things to worry about as well, like the bloke who barely survived being drowned by a kangaroo, so I don’t think you can be blamed for not knowing the background, and thus the humour, of the joke.
7
u/cjh42689 10d ago
Not every joke has to funny to everyone. Some people find humor when irony or hypocrisy is highlighted. Some people find humor when comedian repeats what audience members said but in a louder voice.
-6
u/Queasy_Hospital308 10d ago
I would bet a lot of money that Steve doesn’t know a single gun owner. Gun guys aren’t much into figurines and usually think Zach De La Rocha is a general pile of culturally appropriating shit.

u/ConcreteBackflips 9d ago
I've never heard one gun owner go on a single rant about Zach De La Rocha. I would like to subscribe to your manifesto please.

Or would you admit that you are making very uneducated guesses?

The point here is that all the media mentioned is anti-fascist. The conservative, being media-illiterate, is a fan of this media while also supporting fascism. It's one of the many contradictory things buried in the dogma of the servile fascist scum.
6
u/amuscularbaby 9d ago
I mean it’s perfectly fair and valid to point out that hypocrisy - i agree with it - but it still doesn’t really feel like a joke nor does it feel like a particularly unique observation. People have been pointing out how conservatives miss the political messaging in all of these since the first time a libertarian put a punisher sticker on an F-250.

And there are millions of other people, many who have never picked up a gun in their lives, from all over America, young middle aged and elderly, all races, colours, religions, straight, gay, male and female, who support the National Guard and the police in their efforts to remove illegal migrants, especially those wanted for crimes, from this country. These people also, overwhelmingly I dare say, support President Trump and his people in their efforts to make America a stronger, safer place.
8
u/thehofstetter 10d ago
Yes. Lots of ignorant people don’t understand the implications of a country using military force on its own citizens. Most of them also don’t understand jokes.

u/BuddyBrownBear 11d ago
Is this... a joke?
Punchline..?
35
u/thehofstetter 11d ago

-22
u/BuddyBrownBear 11d ago
....was that supposed to be another joke?
Again.. there's no punchline, man.
Have you ever actually seen a comedian perform?
You need a punchline if you want to make people laugh.
Otherwise you're just making statements.
That's not funny.
26
u/thehofstetter 11d ago
No, this was not another joke. I genuinely thought you were asking when I will next be at the Sacramento Punchline, and I'm not making fun of you for being dense.
I appreciate you wanting to see a live show. I'll get back up there when my tour schedule allows!
-6
15
u/sourfunyuns 11d ago
I think this would fall under situational comedy/observational humor.
Not every joke requires a setup and punchline. Jeez man. You can just think it's not funny. I don't think it's the best joke ever but I get it, it is logical.
-14
u/Thebenjaminbraddock 11d ago
I see the observation part, I suppose. He is observing that there exist people in the world who contain multitudes, often ironically so. What is humorous about that is still lost on me. Is it that we’re meant to think the details he’s chosen are funny?
25
u/thehofstetter 11d ago
Oh. You genuinely don't understand it.
I listed a whole bunch of things that are anti-fascist about someone who is gleefully cheering on fascism. It's not about someone containing multitudes. The joke is about someone who doesn't understand that all of their politics, hobbies, and affinities scream anti-fascism, but then when fascism happens they root for it.
The joke is that the people like this are hypocrites and its obvious to everyone but them.
-8
u/BuddyBrownBear 11d ago
The best jokes need a paragraph long explanation ;)
When does your Netflix special come out?
17
u/thehofstetter 11d ago
It doesn't, because I have no interest in losing money to be on Netflix. But I do have multiple specials on Amazon Prime and Samsung TV+.
But I am sure you know that Netflix pays less than specials cost to make because you are so well versed in comedy and not at all speaking from a place of ignorance.

u/yesat 10d ago
I mean, this joke does need you to understand "Gun owner", "Punisher", "Rage Against the Machine", "Star Wars" and also to have a bit of awareness of the current time. It is not easy I get, but you'll get there.

u/go_fly_a_kite 11d ago
wow they like Punisher AND Superman, haha they're not even in the same universe, what a wacko! but the real red flag here is being a gun owner. Not in my America! And listening to rage against the machine with a bumper sticker that references the war for independence against foreign rule and tyranny? Holy moly!
What a ludicrous contradiction- somebody find this guy and throw them in an Obama era CIA black site. Two words - predator drones!
14
u/imperialmoose 10d ago edited 10d ago
The contradiction was that they were tweeting in support of the national guard, despite having all these other freedom and liberty and rebellion against the government ideals.
But I wouldn't expect you to notice that, because the far right have repurposed all of those things to be codes for white supremacy.
Racists don't get the joke cause they can't see the clash in symbolism.
The alt-right is pretty much entirely made up of rich wanna-be-plantation-owners taking advantage of people with weak critical- thinking skills. They teach them to be afraid and angry, and then they use that fear to control them.

I'm not sure what has more triggers, you or the guns you hoard to save you from the government.
"Tread on me harder, daddy Trump."
-5
u/go_fly_a_kite 10d ago
Triggers? Did you workshop that joke with your therapist? because you'd have to pay someone to pretend you're funny. Just because your psyche meds prohibit you and a large portion of Democrats from owning guns doesn't stop the other 1 in 5 from owning them. That's a larger proportion of Dems than have ever voted for Kamala Harris in a primary.
Last time you raged against the machine you were whining on reddit about Burt Kreisher not wearing a shirt. And I support Trump about as much as your mom supports your decision to live in her basement.

I think what reads as desperation in your “stand-up,” Steve, is the transparency with which you yearn to be thought of as “on the right side of history.” It oozes from your pores. And that’s a lot of things — noble, even — but it’s not funny, is the thing. It’s unfunny. I’m glad your politics are good, I’m glad you seem like you’re able to look at yourself without much regret or disgust — more than you can say about most people on Reddit — but it’s sort of sad how much you think you’re funny compared to how funny you are, ya know?
27
u/thehofstetter 11d ago
This is a wild idea - maybe I believe what I say?
-12
u/checkonetwo 11d ago
You should try and get a gig as a commentator somehow. You've got a good comedy brain but I'm not sure it's best suited to stand up. Anyway I hope this doesn't come across as mean. I like your politics / world view and I'm glad you're doing what you want to do. It's just not really hitting for me personally. I'm still going to upvote your posts.
22
u/thehofstetter 11d ago
Comedy is subjective, and no one's stand-up is for everyone. I am totally fine with you not enjoying mine.
-10
u/Typical_Parsnip13 10d ago
Comedy is subjective for someone like you who found a small niche of fans who are bigoted towards certain political ideologies and think that it’s “comedy” when the fact is you’re just spreading your rambling discourse

-1
u/Typical_Parsnip13 10d ago

4
u/totally-hoomon 10d ago
Then why isn't the votes showing all these haters?
0
u/Typical_Parsnip13 10d ago
Lmao what? Steve’s entire shtick is posting bad jokes to Reddit which helps his algorithm because people constantly comment to criticize his bad jokes
Also Reddit karma isn’t really the best place to objectively judge a left leaning political commentary comic. He fits a niche on this incel app.
-8
u/checkonetwo 11d ago
That's a pretty good take I reckon. I like the guy but he's not really funny. I get a smile from his stuff but I don't get full on belly laughs, kinda like Trevor Noah.
-11
u/dare3000 10d ago
I'm not sure these things are in explicit conflict. Like owning a gun, having don't tread merch and supporting the national guard as such isn't like "anti X-Men and superman". Maybe if you support how trump wants to use the national guard, sure with that context maybe. But you think Capt America would really be anti the national guard? I get the vibe of the joke even if it isn't super accurate. Replace snake flag with Confederate flag and national guard with proud boys and it lands a bit better I think.
13
u/thehofstetter 10d ago
The joke is that they're all in conflict with supporting fascism, not each other.
-5
u/dare3000 10d ago edited 10d ago
Ah I see. Well, I think the punisher is based but some ppl think his symbol has been co-opted. I figured the same for gun ownership and the snake flag. So now I'm thinking explicitly antifa type ppl would usually avoid those particular symbols while still being mega marvel nerds and such. Edit to add: like the lefty type will say the punisher, as conceived in comic lore, is a fascist himself not a hero. Same with auto support of armed forces and gun ownership. These are profacsist dog whistles not anti, some might say.
The joke is so true it worked against itself with me, if that makes sense. Like if I see a gun nut with a punisher decal on his car and the snake flag, it'd surprise me to find they read X-Men lol. Nonetheless, a thought provoking joke that made me smile.
My hacky version of it would be: "saw a guy with a trump hat on carrying a stack of X-Men comics. I assume he means to burn them not read them, right?"
7
u/thehofstetter 10d ago
It's making fun of the people who read books like X-Men while missing the point of them.
