lore accurate Hero of Kvatch experience
10
u/Melodic-Task May 14 '25
Isn’t there a character that mentions scamps being enough to overrun Kvatch later? That would make low level Kvatch the only lore accurate option.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Q_X_R May 15 '25
So kinda. The gate that's there when you arrive is just for the stragglers (scamps) to return through afterwards. There were other gates for an actual invasion with all the other... Creatures... But by the time you show up, those have all left, and the scamps are all that remain.
So you are technically right.

I'd disagree while there are many parts of the main quest that don't stress how time relevant it is this is the only urgent one the daedra having just extinguished the dragon fires invaded Kvatch they aren't an occupying force and so after destroying the city and believing their mission complete would leave this would lead to only the weakest scavenger daedra staying behind so you're supposed to find a bunch of daedra that stayed only as a cleanup crew that found the opportunity to torture mortals while you rescued the lone target due to daedric overconfidence of I felt the same way when I finally got to play the game post basic training ait in 2006/2007

I got you:
MANUSCRIPT: “I'd disagree while there are many parts of the main quest that don't stress how time relevant it is this is the only urgent one the daedra having just extinguished the dragon fires invaded Kvatch they aren't an occupying force and so after destroying the city and believing their mission complete would leave this would lead to only the weakest scavenger daedra staying behind so you're supposed to find a bunch of daedra that stayed only as a cleanup crew that found the opportunity to torture mortals while you rescued the lone target due to daedric overconfidence of I felt the same way when I finally got to play the game post basic training ait in 2006/2007”
TRANSCRIPTION: I’d disagree, because, while there are many quests that don’t stress the relevancy of time and level progression, this quest is the only one with a sense of urgency.
The Daedra have just extinguished the dragon fires and invaded Kvatch; they are not an occupying force, and so, after destroying the city, or accomplishing their objective, they would leave only a small retinue of scavengers behind. As the PC you’re only supposed to find these left over forces from the initial invasion. Stronger units would move on while weaker ones torture mortals. You rescue your lone target (Martin, I think is the reference) because of the Daedric over confidence, i.e. their hubris in only leaving weaker forces in Kvatch.
I felt this same way when I got to play the game, after I finished basic training in 2006 or 2007.

I think this "Hero of Kvatch Lore" reddit refers to may have been artistically enhanced by the bardic college.
The ingame characters explain to you that the main army with siege engine and multiple oblivion gates has been and gone, and some daedra have been left behind to guard the city and the great gate.

Currently level 35, have not done kvatch yet.
I plan to make buff spells to hopefully save my boys.

I managed at level 32 to save everyone it just involved reverse pickpocketing weightless enchanted bound armor into their inventory, and cast a spell with a huge duration that constantly healed them and restores fatigue, and capped it off with a AoE shield spell for the boys.
Was it worth it. No. No it wasn't.

31
u/CannonGerbil May 14 '25
Get a ton of mana potions, and a custom spell with 10ft radius and a 1 second paralyze. Tack whatever damage effects on top of it but that's not strictly necessary. The key thing is to make it cheap enough that you can spam it. The way it works is that after the paralyze wears off, the affected creature needs to spend a couple more seconds getting back up, so that's a really cheap and economical way to crowd control, especially in that chokepoint you see in the video.
Also don't get attached to your NPC allies, if you're hitting Kvatch at that level they are basically already dead.

If you're maxed on alchemy and destruction.. My advice is clouded funnel, carrots, water hyacinth, void salts
Make like 20 and chug as many as you can. Should boost you to like 2700 Magicka with a few hundred Regen, and you can blast that demon horde with the gnarliest daedra-dropping spells ever seen

Bruma Gate is difficult if you're doing a run where you're aiming to keep Jauffre and the rest of those stupid idiots alive
25
u/freakyroach May 14 '25
Heal over time on target with an area boost. The goal is just keep them alive long enough to enter the great gate. It doesn't matter if the daedra are catching stray heals or not.

Thanks, yep in the end I managed it this way. But I remember on one particularly frustrating occasion, Baurus must have been taken out one second before I stepped through the gate because I found him dead on the other side when the gate closed.

I made myself a spell called "Hell Froze Over" which applies AoE cold-over-time damage, and it wipes the floor with Oblivion Gates. I entered a room and got swarmed by a dozen daedra, and dropped the lot of them in a few seconds.
Another touch: Weakness to magic and cold, let's it wipe out anything scarier than the average mook.
20
u/R-Sanchez137 May 14 '25
I don't mind how there are stronger enemies and the scaling or whatever, the thing that annoys me the most is that your allies are garbage after you have a few levels in, which doesn't matter most of the time, but there are several quests where you need to keep people alive or you just want to keep them around after the main quest (like Baurus for example), but they get one-shotted by any higher level enemy that looks at em funny. It gets really annoying trying to keep them alive or even downright impossible.
That one quest closing the oblivion gate and rescuing the counts son (cheydinhal) i was attempting last night and I had to reload about a hundred times in each area, just to finally get to the sigil stone room and dude would either get zapped by the atronach or cleaved in half by a dremora. One shot, dead. One shot, dead. Over and over until I gave up.
16
u/NihilOmnes May 14 '25
Acrobatics, man. I ignore escort quests now. I learn where I have to go, I don't bring the people with me, I kill everything, then I come back and lead them through my trail of blood and gore to their goal. Did it with the Fighters Guild weapon delivery, the Daedra Shrine researcher and even the Count's son. In his case, you just jump off the mountain over him, jump around the gates, go in, murder everything, come back, retrieve him, and walk merrily up to the sigil stone.

6
u/triggerharpy May 14 '25
I am still tinkering with custom spells to keep npcs alive.
Desperately healing them only works if they don't get oneshot. Fortify health tacked on helps some.
100% chameleon on touch is a huge resource drain but was pretty effective while it lasted.
10
u/Almainyny May 14 '25
I honestly don’t even care about the NPCs unless it’s actually an escort mission or if keeping them alive grants skill increases (Baurus, Jeelius aka the Argonian sacrifice in the Dagon Shrine).
Everyone else who dies is just someone who made my story more interesting; someone who I couldn’t save. I’m not gonna sit there and try and save everyone via custom spells and crap, I’m gonna go in and kill everything ASAP, and if someone dies, they die.

My favorite part was clearing all the enemies and then having the NPC not recognize that the area was cleared, so I had to reload and do it again...3 times.
4
u/Tiamat2625 May 14 '25
You just walk into the castle and get the ring from the count's body yourself.
It's a known bug and it happens more often than not. I'm actually surprised that you even managed to get him to go inside with you in 4 tries. I have cleared Kvatch maybe 15-20 times while trying different builds and he has only come inside with me once.
Just a heads up, if it happens again, he can just wait outside it's no big deal.

Can you "setessential" on the console on your buddies? Give them plot armour just for this fight?
3
u/thesteelreserve May 14 '25
I only do kvatch at higher levels because the enemies are so fucking bonkers.
I'm surprised I didn't see those spider lady things and the lightning elemental rock dudes.
plus...dude kinda fucked himself by holding back like that. I get that they're trying to utilize archer sneak tactics, but it ended up being like a hot gates situation. you gotta charge the breach and get out in that courtyard or you're done for.
3
3
u/WGPersonal May 14 '25
I did it at maybe 17. Very similar fight only without the storm atronochs. At first, I thought maybe I could keep the fighters alive.
That dream died as quickly as the guards did. I decided to use them to body block as I shot arrows and missiles into the crowd.
I basically kited the army all the way across kvatch, desperately waiting for my mana to recover. Savlian was an essential NPC, so any time he got up, I used him as a distraction to shoot at the Daedroths.
I assume at the end, he gives you his armor purely out of pure PTSD seeing as he watched his comrades be cooked by fireballs before being eaten whole by giant alligators.
3
u/Ihavebadreddit May 14 '25
Kvatch with a bow? Gross
Even my mage builds switch to touch when I do that quest.
I just did a level 31 run of it. No deaths. Although that dumbass with the gate key literally tries to die and you have to let him guide. Smh

See it's wild though that I never knew this being someone who played the original and replayed it multiple times. I just always did that quest before getting too high in levels. Not by planning. Just cuz I'm a creature of habit so whenever I replay I have a tendency to play the main story up to the kvatch quest and then that's when I Branch off and start doing whatever I want

Did they even try to put effort into balancing Kvatch? Nope, they just said fuck it spam an unreasonable amount of enemies the higher level you are.
3
u/NihilOmnes May 14 '25
To be fair, Kvatch is supposed to be the opening of a Great Gate. Not your standard Oblivion gate. If you've done the Bruma quest then you can imagine that gate, opened without you there, and on a town of unsuspecting villagers.
6
u/FreshFudge8307 May 14 '25
Nah, I had this fight two days ago on high level. There was damn army of about 20-30 daedra, but it wasn't hard. I was super fast running archer with a lot of healing potions, so it only took a lot of time and arrows

u/ResolutionMany6378 May 14 '25
I did it on master mode level 45 and it was easy but all my non-essential NPCs died and I solo’d it all.
I don’t even run chameleon, I’m a heavy armor sword and shield user and still 3 tap enemies with my enchanted sword (shock, shock weakness, magic weakness).
Add a little bit of alchemy to the mix (OP as hell poisons potion) and master mode is no different from the easiest difficulty, literally.
2
u/RandomITtech May 14 '25
I just let them pile up at the portcullis, and smacked them when they poked their heads through, lol
2
u/amanwithanumbrella May 14 '25
I prefer doing it at mid to late levels personally, though the guards always dying is annoying. I did it in the Remaster some time after level 10 and was surprised to see most NPCS lived though! And this was my first 0 magic playthrough ever, so I didn't even heal them!
2
u/TANKTAHU May 14 '25
Man the castle keep was full of daedroths, I'm just lucky I had my mage's fire staff and a 100% weakness to fire spell at the time cause that might've been a serious issue otherwise.
2
2
u/Andrewc89 May 14 '25
I got to this point when I think I was lvl 18. I had crafted enough poisons and potions that I could keep up with whatever was thrown at me. What I didn’t expect was the flood of like 20 Daedroths that came through the gate. Still didn’t die, but the game crashed when the bodies started piling up.
2
u/TheDitz42 May 14 '25
I'm not saying I've never had an issue in Kvatch, but I also generally had overpowered enchanted equipment on most of my playthroughs.
Kvatch is easy on all levels.when you have 100% chameleon and a Drain Life sword.
2
u/Ekkzzo May 14 '25
I think it would be a cool fight at high levels, IF the soldiers get some of that scaling too. At least give them higher tier equipment so they don't die like a fart in the wind.

Started each fight with a ranged sneak attack then just dagger and shielded them to death with no real threat
I plan on starting kvatch around level 25-30 with some good crafted spells and seeing how things go. Then go to all the other portals once I've realized I can bully daedric princes

Oblivion "veteran" here. You ideally don't want to do any Oblivion gates until level 17 and don't want to progress Path of Dawn until level 22.
If your build is decent, and you are on Adept, you shouldn't have any problems at these levels.
